Air bows in oklahoma

Oklahoma legalized air bows for use during gun season last year and I wondered how long it would take before they were included in archery season. Turns out it’s already happening. Most states already legalized cross bows in the name of inclusiveness and hunter recruitment but it’s never enough. Gotta have the next greatest thing. Supposedly the fastest one will fire at 600fps.

I think they're just doing everything they can to get us to kill more deer to keep the population in check. On top of that, the deer herd is still growing, and our suburban areas are spilling more into the deer habitat, so there are even more areas with too many deer but too many people to safely hunt with firearms. It's just a effort to create more opportunity to hunt in populated areas.

When we bought our house six years ago, we didn't see any sign of deer for the first three years, despite being on the edge of the woods. We're in a neighborhood with typical city subdivision lots. We still don't see deer in our yard, but I can tell they're here at night by the droppings in the lawn. The woods to the north of us are dotted with homes on 10-30 acre lots, and at least three of them have feeders we can see from the road. (one of those also has a ground blind and tree stand over the feeder) I'm sure that population is increasing, and it won't be long until we're seeing them in daylight in the yard.

I actually have more problem with the proposed August "velvet buck" season than I do with air-bow legalization. The August season has nothing to do with managing the deer herd. It's strictly about getting more money selling tags.

If I had to guess I’d say there are fewer deer on the public I hunt than when I was a kid. The problem with population control is that it’s so area specific in what needs to be done. Areas where no hunting is allowed won’t be affected regardless of what weapons are allowed. Public hunting areas already get a lot of pressure and I don’t think deer are over populated in them.

Is there a proposed August season in Oklahoma?

Besides frontier life prior to buffalo hunters, I can’t think of a better time in North American history to kill critters. Tons of land, tons of critters, tons of ways to kill ‘em.

It’s an abundance circumstance, if you think about it at scale. You may have to sacrifice time and money and “my little corner of the world don’t have no deer!” Areas. But just think about what almost every other human on this continent had to sacrifice to “kill critters” before repeating rifles and wildlife biologists and state funding and what not.

I’ve never understood peoples fascination with the velvet antlers thing.
Its just a novelty...and people like paying inordinate amounts of money for novelty things. Course the problem with velvet bucks that unless they had an injury or female and you got in late enough into the season, you'll be lucky to get an early season velvet deer to a taxi in time to keep it intact.
