I went out yesterday afternoon to a spot I had scoured before but never sit. I was walking in and bumped a buck off of the leeward side of a hill, I could tell he wasn’t to spooked so I walked down to where I entered a draw and set up. I had a good wind and the thermals were cooperating so I figured I didn’t have much to lose. Shooting light was fading since we had storms moving in so I started climbing down at 6:30. I lowered my bow and dropped one stick to the ground and unhooked another. At this point I’m standing on the middle step of my second stick I look up and this buck walks in to 15 yards and starts eating acorns. After a few minutes he J hooked and went back into his bedding area. He knew something was there but I had the tree between me and him and he could never figure out what I was.

It was a super cool encounter but my right foot was literally throbbing from the LW step lol. He was a good 2.5 y/o and would have made a good first bow/saddle kill.
 
Been there except I was on my way up standing on bolts for what seemed like eternity while a bunch of does came out of a bedding area and started feeding within 20yds. All I could do was hug the tree and ignore the pain in my arms and legs until they finally moved off.
 
Sounds like you fit the hardest pieces to the puzzle together. Are you gonna use the newly discovered info and get back in there?

I’m definitely going back. It’s an overlooked spot and doesn’t get a lot of pressure

It really hurt when I thought to myself "why didn't I leave 10 minutes earlier?"
 
Haha, I experienced a very similar situation, only I was in a lock on. There was some heavy rain starting to come down and I didn’t feel like waiting it out. It was already mid morning so I decided to get back to camp. I lowered my bow and was standing up disconnecting my safety harness when a beautiful 2.5yr old tall racked buck came in and starting feeding in the small food plot I was hunting. I watched him feed on wheat toward the oak I was on until he saw my bow blowing in the wind a foot or two off the ground. He was 20’ - 25’ by then, got spooked, looked up at me and left. The whole event did not last a couple minutes but in the rain it was long enough. Those are the hunts you remember.

You’re right I’ll never forget that hunt lol. It wasn’t a buck I’d normally shoot but I’m trying to get this first bow off my back so every thing is pretty much fair game at this point. Standing on that single step of my LW stick was brutal lol

Man that was me last season. Halfway down the tree and I see headgear moving through the thicket. Froze in place and he walked in by. Never saw him again. Hopefully you get yours.
