So with the Alabama season wrapping up. I am getting geared up for post season scouting. Pretty much all I’ve done in the past is going in to collect my cameras and poke around a little about 2 weeks after the season. Just curious how some of you other Deep South hunters handle this? Due to the late rut here, which just started about 10 days- 2 weeks ago. I’m guessing I can get a good idea about where would be a good rut location by going in immediately after the season and getting all up in their business. I’m also guessing that around turkey season (March-April) they would be shifting back to summer patterns and maybe dropping antlers? So that could give me a good idea for early season locations? We don’t get much time before snake season picks up here so trying to figure out a timetable.

All I Gotta say is you better get in the woods now. I waited and did all my scouting over the summer and it was absolutely miserable and I’m five hours north of you. I’m going to try and scout between now and turkey season but I can’t put a high priority on it since it is Wife season now. I’ve noticed around me that a lot of the pre-rut sign is still visible this time of year though not fresh. I have an idea to go and mark all the scrapes and rubs to help make quick work of checking them for fresh sign the next season. Good luck!

How deep south are you?

When I lived in Bama (barely above 10), I always took the last few days of season off and took an extra day immediately after season to scout for rut sign. Tough going down that way as the sign is as limited as the number of mature bucks. Green up is your enemy, and it’s coming soon.

Grab a .22 and walk as much as you can in the woods before squirrel season is over. Them grab a shotgun and walk during turkey season. By the time that's over it's too hot for smart boys to be walking, so hip in the truck and ride some land you've never seen before.

I guess that was part of my question, is the turkey season fresh sign useful in the upcoming fall? Or am I looking for old rut sign from the previous rut?

This is my first season post season scouting also. I tried to scout in the summer but by 11am here in Arkansas it sucked pretty bad. I’m gonna try to get all my post season scouting in before its warm enough to start chasing crappie

Yes that was my experience this past summer. I found some of my better scouting ended up being done with a paddle in my hand.
