Ameristep strap on step recall information

Is it generally accepted that the ameristeps without a stamped date code per say are ok to utilize? I must have some of the earlier steps as mine only have numerical numbers inside the circular hole on each step. No apparent date code on the step anywhere. These steps also have the older strap and buckle similar to the lone wolf buckle (no metal L shaped ring like on the newer steps). Thoughts??

The numbers inside the circular hole are just single numbers like 1,2,3,4 not the proverbial stamped date code.

Yours are fine. The older the better honestly. The ones that were recalled were fairly new.

Also, the ones that were recalled will visibly flex when you put any weight on it. Regardless of any date/time/code stamp, if you stand on it and it bends at all...no bueno.

That's what mine have. Just 1,2,3,4 inside the hole. I've got a set of 10 that's been in a backpack in the attic for 10yrs+. I used them twice I think. I'm just starting the whole saddle hunting thing sounds like they will come in handy.

It's like you found gold in your attic.

Seems like it. Now if i can just get the hang of this whole saddle hunting thing. Trying to rig bridges and ropes an prusiks and blakes hitch. What rope to use an so on. Kinda overwhelming lol

Take it one thing at a time. It's not bad once you get it all figure out.

Not sure how to post up a photo, but when I get back home Sunday, I'll try to get a picture up for you guys of two steps that gave out on me today. In another state here checking cams, and setups, when two " not one but two steps" snapped! Exciting it was, at about 23 feet up. I believe these steps are pre date stamped, because I never could find anything on them. All was good though, I was attached with the Anderson, and climbing belt back up.Just a "pucker moment" for sure!

Most plastics become brittle over time. I also broke a couple Ameristep 155's. Don't ever use these without being attached to a lineman belt or rope.

Were you using them as originally intended? Climbing and applying full weight?

Same question for you, were you climbing and applying full weight? This blows my mind.

I was climbing and trimming limbs, so leaning out a bit and applying more load than just standing. I would still use them as a platform but only put weight on them when strapped in.

Yeah, the second step that went I was bouncing on it pretty good because I was still dumbfounded over the first one that caught me off guard a few minutes before. but the first one went, as I was moving from knees to tree on the assassin to the first step to the left at maybe 9:00 with my left foot I had my wicked saw extended to about 6 feet simulating a recurve type shot at 12:00 so I did have pretty much all weight on my left foot. May be a little hard to visualize but unlike a compound where you can stay tight to tree and shoot vertical, the canting involved does kind of force you out and away a little. make sense?

I would keep your recalled steps if you have them guys.. If we figure out how to recast these steps you will have a perfect template to make a mold from.
Any luck finding someone that can recast these steps yet? I have an idea on how improve on them. Going to make some prototypes out of three quarter plywood. These will not be to hunt off of but merely to figure out if my design will work. If I can find a company that can make them in plastic I have an idea to add strength. I also considered making them out of aluminum which would be the strongest way to make them the only problem is the cost would be much higher than plastic. I don't want to say too much more I'm hoping to have prototypes complete and have found someone who can make me a finished prototype out of plastic so I can get a couple of you guys to do a product test for me. Obviously signing non-disclosure agreements will be required. Beyond that I would have to set up a company so on and so forth so I'm hoping within a year I could have a finished product ready for sale.

Not much luck. It can be done but the problem is price. Its just too much per step to do in our small quantities. We really need someone to take it commercial. Not saying that they can't be improved, but there are some proven designs out there to go off of. If you get a company set up to start making them that would be awesome. I would definitely be willing to test, and I know @g2outdoors and @Boudreaux have been hunting off steps for a long time too and could give some valuable input.

If my design works as well as I hope it does and I can get a patent I would probably pitch it to some larger companies. Not looking to get rich just want to put out a quality product for the hunting industry. I believe the steps would also make a really nice step system to get into a stand or even the guys who hunt out of lock-on stands on public land. But don't get me wrong making a little money doing something I love to do wouldn't be such a bad thing. Just FYI I ran across saddle hunting only because I was researching what lightweight steps were available on the market already. My original idea was to come up with a step system that could be taken on public land and add very little weight, and take up as little space as possible, to my hunting gear. I'll keep you posted on how things are going granted I probably won't be posting any pictures not at least not until I talk to a patent attorney. PS as I told you on a different thread I am technologically handicapped and was trying to make an edit my post and hit a delete button. I was not trying to take the post down.
