An explosion of mediocre content

I virtually quit watching youtube 3 years ago. Same time I mostly quit drinking. Reading an hour or three every night became my new bedtime routine. Best changes I ever made. Lost 50 pounds, feel much better physically, worlds better mentally.
My kids, especially my 7 year old son is drawn to a lot of the vlog type stuff. Nothing overly brain rotting, just what I think is stupid content. Like go play a game, not watch some numbnut play one. If I let him watch that crap, I notice he starts getting mouthy and doing dumb crap for attention. Youtube's on ban in our house right now.
I really truly think all this self-centeredness about social media is ripping at the fabric of our society, but I'll veer off before I crash into politics/religion.
On the flipside, as a business owner, I am learning to embrace social media a little bit as a necessary evil. I'll never be a star of the industry but locally there are lots of opportunities for marketing, cheap on social still. I got no rizz on camera and I know a lot of my attempts at content are garbage, so I take offense to some of your accusations haha. No hunting content though, the closest I get is habitat. Huge catch-22 thing. And of course forums like this are my preferred social media, and really have been since I was a teen in the 00's.
I see a lot of people starting businesses these days for this that and everything imaginable, including giving it a go as a professional hunter or huntress, because with the state of Corporate America, who the heck wants to work for the man, if you can even find anything? Not me, that's for sure. Content creator is one of those low barrier to entry dreams and dreamers dream of financial independence. It's hard, hard work to the top, though. And some luck.

Things I didn't know 5 years ago, when I was still a dreamer, before I became a doer:
How easy it is to start a business as a side gig in almost any minimally regulated profession you can imagine (takes less than half a day and $500)
How hard it is to turn a side hustle into an actual, legitimate, pay all the bills business (oh likea few thousand hours, minimum)
I applaud all the dreamers out there, just informing what it takes to quit the day job.
I've never been much of a fan of hunting as an industry and I specifically detest hunting media. But the people that "make it" work their balls off, no doubt and I give them all credit for that.

Are they? I've been hearing that for like 15 years now. Which is crazy in itself how long this stuff's been around by now. 15 years seemed like a really, really, long time 15 years ago. Now it seems like nothing.
But what do I know. Maybe it's like a death by 1000 cuts thing. Personally I would love to see it, I think that would be fantastic for ensuring that hunting has a place in society well into the future.

Any idea when this ban takes effect? Are they taking down all hunting content?
Seems like demonetizing hunting content could actually benefit the channels that have already attained success. THP for example probably has tons of revenue streams at this point. Demonetizing would very effectively block any new competitors from getting into the market.

I'm not aware of any new efforts toward this.
What was attempted a few years ago was to demonetize content that contained impact shots, field dressing, butchering, necropsies, animals in distress as a result of hunting (think catch dogs on a wild hog, etc.) and so on ....
That is, they demonetized the most graphic stuff. It's still out there available to be viewed; it's just not getting ad revenue. So no "ban."
But the results might be a partial reason why some people have less interest in some hunting videos. Muzzle a significant portion of reality and folks will turn away.
On a side note, I'm always surprised how many hunters think hunting videos are the boogeyman.

I agree with all the posts about the social media being poison. This type of forum is the only social media I use. No facebook, Instagram, or anything like it.
On another note, I hate hunting videos and shows. The things they do to get those videos and footage is not what I call hunting. It's killing. Had a friend that hunted on property adjacent to ground that the M**** Oak guys hunted. He always shot bigger deer than they did, simply because he knows HOW to HUNT. Every morning they'd come rolling in on quads, clanking away, and scaring everything within a half mile away. Usually over to my buddy's place. He said they had corn piles, acorn piles, feeders, water tanks, alfalfa, everything they could do to attract deer. He also found several dead deer on his place. Gut shots, liver shots, and wounded deer every year. They'd do anything for that footage of a big buck kill. I know we all have made, or will make a bad shot once in a while, but not every year. If we do, we need to spend a heck of a lot more time practicing. Seems everyone in the hunting media had forgotten, or never knew, that it's about the experience, the hunt itself, and the experience. Great set of antlers on the wall is nice, but not what hunting is all about.
The last guy I saw on TV that I liked was "The World's Biggest Bowhunter". This guy went home more often empty handed than not. Talked about his set up, equipment, scouting, etc. It was about the work and the hunting experience for him, not the "money kill shot".

I was typing up a response but you beat me to it, you’re correct on all of it, sometimes people will change/edit the color to black and white during graphic stuff to fool the Youtube checks and balances, some computer program that looks for that stuff or whatever.
As a person who makes content when the feeling hits I've analyzed hunting content specifically. I'd say 99.9% of story based hunting content at minimum requires a camera man in addition to the hunter. It's too fluid of a situation to follow along with static shots and it not feel "vloggy".
It's so much extra **** to carry and worry about solo. I know how to frame shots, lighting, audio, edit. But you know what, none of that really works well alone. Take note of the better channels. They don't even run camera arms in trees.

There is an interesting theory called "dead internet theory" that is turning out to hold some water. Currently, something like 51% of all internet traffic is bots. So, there are more bots on the internet than humans at present and it is only going to get worse. There are far few original sites and the vast majority of people gravitate to large platforms like Facebook, X, etc.
The internet has been monetized by big tech, sanitized and homogenized to the point there isn't a whole lot of original material out there. Add to that the fact that Youtube creators self censor their content to get their videos monetized. Many sites are so clogged down with pop up ads that they are absolutely unusable without some heavy duty ad blockers in place.
This site is one of the only places I visit and interact with on the internet anymore.

I wish you would post more stuff! Your videos were of the most influential for me getting into one sticking. Although I’ve gone back to sticks for the most part, I will watch your timed climbing video just before the season several times to get me pumped!!!
If there's one thing I've learned over the years it's to never say never. However, I can say I have never uttered the phrase "Like and Subscribe" in or about any video I've ever done nor do I see myself saying it in the future.
When I started the channel I was working full time and now I'm an old retired guy who, at this point anyway, doesn't need the money or the hassle. It's just not worth it to me to deal with worrying about producing content. In fact I can't remember the last time I posted a video and although I think about doing some updates I just struggle with effort involved to produce them from planning, setting up, videoing (multiple takes because I can't talk straight with the camera on

I will say I seek out Greg Clement’s’ stuff from THP. Especially enjoy his solo hunts for both deer and turkey. His story structure and camera work is among the best out there. I like that whole crew of fellers from THP but Greg’s s tuff is a level above. I also like Do It Yourself Hunter’s stuff. Find myself watching thier content a lot. Just seems very real not contrived. Also enjoy the BWB stuff lately really getting an itch to head more north into some wilderness and track a big buck. Something very simplistic about just taking a few small items and your gun and just getting on a good track. I like the guidance of how do you know if it’s a track worth following? You’ll say “Holy Spit!” When you find it……..

Hunting videos honestly just got so soulless and unwatchable it’s all some guys sitting in a dark room explaining about this buck that was bred to have a 50 lb rack and eat peanuts from the feeder or food plot and costs 150k to shoot. Then they climb into a tree with 7 camera guys and a refreshment station and kill the buck and spend the rest of the show laying with the deer talking about “thunder” or “atlas”. Like no crap you got him he was at the petting zoo last week. The other half is shaking videos of a kill shot. Now I just watch those 2 Asian guys build some jungle house with a pool underground and ignore the equipment tracks in the background.
