Another Pull Up Rope Question…

I’ve been using UHMWPE “kite” line (it’s like a cheap, small diameter dyneema) as a bow pull up rope for a couple of years now just because it’s so small and packable while still being plenty strong. It can be a little hard on the fingers, but it’s worth it for me, and it now doubles as the pull down rope for my rappel rope.

I like the idea of a gear hoist, but they’re all just so big and bulky that I’ve never bothered trying one. But I’ve often wondered why someone doesn’t make a much smaller one for 1.3mm braided line. It would be like a Doyle’s hoist but a third or quarter the size and still plenty strong.

I just happened to see the new integrated bow winch on APA’s 2023 bows, and that got me all excited because it seems to be exactly what I was looking for… but then I heard the $150 price tag! No thanks.

But that got me wondering if I could just rig up something myself. I’m fairly handy. Does anyone have any ideas or shortcuts on how to rig up a tiny, manually cranked bow hoist?

Cheap retractable dog leash. Mine was $5 in the checkout line at ikea and it’s rated for a big pitbull. Sorry about the upside down photos, they are not upside down on my camera roll 56E7396C-D9CB-40F1-ABAC-E0221148B9D7.jpeg0AE133A3-DB7B-4787-B733-4757C55D3957.jpeg

I’ve used this for awhile with success:
Paracord Planet Line Winder Rope Organizer - Several Colors Available - Prevents Tangles, Knots and Kinks in Your Paracord - Spool Tool for Multiple Uses https://a.co/d/cnX6vqa

I use this to wind and tend my tomato trellis line that all my Tomahooks hang from.

irrelevant to OP though…
If you’re on presets, just leave paracord in tree with a boat anchor cleat at height that you can spoil cord on each preset.
I haven’t used anything other than my trusty dog leash in 2 years though

I’ve been using paracord since day one and just wrap it into a figure 8. I actually found a Doyle’s and tried it out for when I don’t one stick and I hated it

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I’ve seen the dog leash ideas, but they’re too loud and bulky for me. Might as well have a Doyle’s.

I’m intrigued by @Cbigbear ‘s photo, but I’m not sure what it is. Looks like a small hand operated reel of some kind?

It’s a blank dive reel we sell for $25 or lined with dynema for $35. They come with Molle belt clips. I fish my gear up so prefer a smaller none retractable reel.

Wait... You fish your gear up? Like every time, on purpose, you leave your gear at the base of the tree and then use a gravity grappling hook to grab it and pull it up? If that's the case, do you find that easier than having a preattached rope? Sounds hard to me especially in the dark so I'm intrigued as to why you would do it.

Edit: I now see the attached light to the gravity hook, I imagine that helps solve the dark problem.

Yes I deal with a lot of vines and trash trees. I found a pre hooked rope would tangle so started fishing my bow & extra clothes when necessary.
