Any things to keep in mind for new hunters?

Man, if I can't figure out a few pieces of seatbelt and some rope, I don't deserve to be in mechanical engineering anyways.

People on here are going to definitely tell you that your life or the ability to walk is not worth experimenting with a DIY saddle. Having said that, plenty of people do use DIY saddles. My first one was cobbled together from an old safety harness and 2” triglides.
If you decide to DIY, test the heck out of it at ground level.

Any ideas on how to make friends with the local hunters? If there's a Tennessee hunting board or something somewhere that would be a godsend, but I'm not holding my breath. My school is right in the thick of Nashville, but it's also pretty cut off from the rest of town.
There are a couple of good TN hunting groups on Facebook (Tennessee Woods and Waters is a great one), as well as a TNDeer.com forum where you could reach out for some contacts. Start networking and I bet in no time you’ll find someone else who might be looking for a hunting partner.

Im talking about the recon...

Oh yeah, I don’t know why my brain assumed you meant DIY.
The Recon has almost infinite adjustment which can be a good thing, but if you like to tinker and look for that ‘perfect position’, it can get you busted.
I can't sew, I don't have a sewing machine, and I don't have much time to learn to sew, so it would be a really bad idea for me to DIY, I agree with you there.
