Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

Congratulations! You win the prize….whatever you think that is.

My prize is self reliance (definitely a concept lost on most nowadays), solitude, well earned venison, and the satisfaction of leaving all the stupid distractions and technology behind so i can become immersed in the wilderness which is what hunting is all about.

Those of you riding in on an electric motorcycle using a waypoint on your phone that leads you to a spot you dropped a cell cam that sends you real time photos only to not kill the buck there because when he came up behind you you were staring at your phone posting cell cam pics of him to your facebook are really missing out big time. Those guys are the real losers and sadly they don’t have a clue.

Ok, you are the ultimate predator man and no-one else can compare to you. Lol give me a break

Have you considered that sometimes the vehicle is a deterrent to folks coming in on you? I mention this because I was involved in such a deal last year. Went in to check 3 spots on a particular road on a wma. When I got to the pull off for one of the spots there was a truck sitting there so I went on past and stopped at the second. The second spot is a no vehicle access trail back to a food plot. Where I was planning to go was on past the plot on the edge of a big slough. Take off down the trail hiking at a good clip and come up on an oak dropping acorns and a bush next to it with a fresh scrape so I stop and look around. Guy from the truck is hanging 30 yards from me. It was like 10 in the morning but I still felt horrible. He motioned me over to his tree. I eased over and apologized and asked how he came in as I had only seen the one vehicle. He said it was his and he had decided to walk in a different way.
Good point but I mostly hunt private and the public I hunt near me has very little pressure even during gun season.

Oh you’re right, hunting is NOT about getting venison and getting out into the woods to leave all that tech behind.

Man, how did the indians ever kill anything and survive without e bikes, cell phones, laser range finders, airbows, cell cams and First Lite camo????

Nah, you give me the break. Leave all that useless crap behind and learn some actual woodsmanship instead of thinking you need the latest greatest tech to kill more deer. You learn to slow down and actually learn to rely on your own senses you’ll become a better hunter. Best advice you’ll ever get related to hunting.

Is thre something you hope to gin from talking down to folks all the time?

I think the real questions we must all ask ourselves is...

When Tethrd collaborates with OnX to produce the first ever carbon fiber ebike with a built in GPS system, should we get the Strata or ASAT pattern? Do we trust the 300lb weight rating? Can we sue if the bike navigates us over the legal property line and we get a ticket? Will it be gen 3 or gen 4 that solves the crotch splinter problem?

I am more looking forward to the Rambo/Treehopper collaboration where the entire bike frame is assembled from removable titanium tree bolts. Get to the tree, disassemble, up you go

I'm leaning towards putting a bafang mid drive conversion on my sparkly purple surly straggler. If I do so I'm going to name my bike swampdonkey lol.

Anyhow let's get back on track. I don't think the 4k+ Rambo's etc are the way to go personally, I'd rather use a bike I own (like the above) or a fat tire/29er hardtail mountain bike for a conversion, and be able to get an extremely capable bike for less than half the price of the Rambo's. Those of you that have or are considering ebikes, where do you fall on the manufactured ebike vs kit on a regular bike debate?

For me it would be likely a bafang mid drive kit, not hub drive, so the strength of the motor/quality of the battery would be comparable to the 750w stock ebikes. I know there's been some discussion of this in prior pages but perhaps there's more we haven't covered

Less motorcycles on public land would be a good start.

It’s not talking down to people to tell them what they don’t want to hear. Telling someone to put the phone and tech down and learn woodsmanship and they’ll be a better hunter is sound advice. Doesn’t matter it hurts their feelings.

Maybe you should take time to know people before taking a guess of their habits and personality and how they hunt rather being an internet Bad butt. I suspect you wear a loin clothe, make your own equipment and live off the grid with no electricity and telepathically putting these comments on the internet.

This isn't a woodsmanship conversation. It's an ebike conversation and you keep trying to enter into it to tell us not to have it. We have heard your opinion, and I for one would like to continue discussing woodsmanship elsewhere and ebikes here and having productive conversations in both spaces. Please. We get it, ebikes aren't for you. Now can we please just go about our business or do you need to keep being right?

I went the kit route, I picked up a real nice trek for a steal off of FB Marketplace and threw a bafang 750W mid drive on it. After putting some 2.4" tires on it, e-bike chain, adjusting the derailleur, and swapping the brake pads I've got a super capable and lightweight rig.

If you're a tinkerer/DIYer I would suggest going this route. If you don't really care go for a manufactured e-bike. Depending on how this season goes I might turn around and build a nice fat bike e-bike from scratch next year.

I have a Bakcou, and have had a Rambo. The Bakcou has much higher quality components, but was also more expensive. Looking at those and comparing it to a home kit….the same quality bike can definitely be made much cheaper with a home kit. I’d say at 1/3 of the price. Start with a quality fat tire bike, and luna cycle sells complete kits. A lot of people are making their own… if I ever buy another one it’ll probably be a M2S with the ultra motor like my Bakcou has. It’s probably the best bike for the money.

Empirical data suggest your opinion is entirely invalid. I would be shocked if you could find a single person that thinks mobile tech hasnt made guys like Mark Drury, Bill Winke, Remi Warren, Dirk Durham, etc, etc. better, more efficient hunters than they were pre-tech. I have zero issues calling a spade a spade but can assure you always taking an antagonistic approach will virtually guarantee the beneficial information you might could otherwise share will be ignored. It is just my opinion but coming at an issue from the standpoint of "I am not a fan of using x tech and feel it is more beneficial to first learn and master these things before relying on tech..." still gets your point across but more importantly opens the door to discussion of the merits of your beliefs without first putting a barrier between you and the person or people you are speaking with at the time. But if you prefer to drive drywall screws with a framing hammer, that's your right.

I was raised in farming country so I’m a pretty handy guy, and I seriously thought of putting a mid drive together myself, but I really didn’t need the capability. I picked up an Aventon Adventure 750W (1130W peak) BaFang hub drive with zero miles on it for $1500, which is plenty for flat gravel roads. I also wanted to stay legal. In VA where I hunt 750W class II is max. The Aventure ships as a class II and that’s where I will keep it, but I can software mod it to class III if that becomes and option in the future. If I start hunting a place that has hills etc, and a bike still makes sense, I can adjust then.

You've made your point . . please let it go and quit stirring the pot. The guys posting in this thread aren't violating any laws and are hunting within their legal rights.

I think if I end up with an e-bike at some point it will be the DIY route too. Not only do I like that its more affordable (still PRETTY steep for a good access), I like the option to repair/upgrade/wrench on a widely available platform that be tied to a propietary system. Having said that, I completely see the draw of just getting a simple streamlined package set up just how you want it that you know works

The article that you cited only continues the current policy, which I don’t view as a particular advantage given that you are limited to trails/roads that are already motorized and you could drive your ATV or Truck down those same trails/roads. Or am I reading it wrong? Maybe some of those “motorized” trails prohibit ATV use and only allow Ebikes?

“The Forest Service currently allows e-bikes on all Forest Service roads that are already open to motorized vehicles, as well on 60,000 miles of motorized trails, which represent 38% of all trails the agency manages. Today’s finalized guidance allows e-bikes to continue to operate on currently-authorized roads and trails
