Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

Croatan, uwarrie, pisgah or nantahalla?

Pisgah/ Nantahala. I’ve already called again today to double check. Two different ranger districts also. So far I’m correct but to be safe I’m waiting on the NC state supervisor. It’s such a gray area and there is more info on the website than the officers have in there book of frequently asked questions.

…there are maintained roads that are always gated here. Which provides tons of access but not for vehicles.
It’s the same way here in VA. On WMA’s and the Great Dismal Swamp NWR (113,000 acres) Class II Ebikes are allowed behind the gated Tracks/roads and provide access to 10’s of thousands of acres, that’s why I bought one…for $1500. Ram 1500’s aren’t allowed the same access.

So here is the deal. They have implemented guidelines and established classes and published it. With words that stumble on each other. They have been classed and set down guidelines but not established the trails or published them yet. Sadly it’s still not black and white because it’s trails they wording discussed and not roads. So having to call my local
Ranger district to find out what trails are on the list. This is annoying again. I’m not even interested in trails or off road. Just a gravel road. Just absurd.

It’s very confusing after three going on four calls now. It is so hard to explain. They have changed the classification to the public in march/April of this year but in an email from November directed to follow original guidelines. So the public is having one set of info and employees another. Then there is the wording of trails which to me is irrelevant because most are labeled and will sooner or later be labeled after a study which could take years or maybe it’s been done. No one knows. It’s a roads thing in limbo. They are considering trails but roads are worded differently. So I’ll continue to attempt to figure it out. I was given no answers about roads that intertwined with gameland. For example one road will go from USFS to NCWRC then back again and so on. On state land any bike under 750w is legal. So there is another variable. Of course this is nothing new even when USFS has the same, forgive me the words slip me today, program maintain oaks in NC as states in the west. It’s a blanket program.

Ok. So I will admit wrong or misunderstood at this point due to weak public communication from the USFS. With chasing this up the chain of supervisors I have found out as follows. A November email instructed enforcement and park officials to still consider e-bikes with a motorcycle. Now fast forward to march/April. A classification has been made public for use of an e-bike on USFS “trails”. What has been left out for public consumption is as follows. The classification will be used and they will be removed from motorized vehicle category. Only when they publish the trails and the trail/ebike classifications. Here is still the problem. A labeled FS#### rd had not been thought of in that capacity because most want to trail ride like mountain bikes not just use gravel roads. Soooo. This list could or could not be in your districts hands according to supervision. It sounds and at this point that gravel roads would fall under class 3 BUT it was admitted about wording stumbling around its self. It does lead to sound like a maintained gravel rd is permitted. Was even interpreted like that by two
District offices. I say this. Contact your local district but until they clarify it. I will not push my luck. In my mind it’s still wrong even if left gray or badly worded. Was I wrong. I will say I was but with a published list I would be right so. I feel more misled than wrong.

The classes are an industry standard. Many states Class 1 and 2 750w and below are considered bicycles and not applicable to motor vehicles. If they were in fact motor vehicles you would have to register, title them, and have a license to ride them. Many federal and state lands are open to their use. I did not start this thread as a moral debate about their use. If you do not like E bikes, great you are welcome to post in other threads. This place was once a great resource of knowledge, with many people helping others. It seems to be sliding a bit with people I see in many other posts stirring the pot. Its a shame really that it seems to be the same people in many different threads stirring stuff up. Dont like E bikes that is cool. Not a reason to try and be condescending towards other people that are choosing to hunt within the confines of the law. I have seen these same people offer to donate stuff to people in need, so I know its not 100% in their nature to be like this. But there seems to be an effort to derail this thread. Lets step back and take a deep breath, and talk about some hunting tactics or methods that we can enjoy and use to put us closer to that thrill of a lifetime.

If there is anyone in the area near me that has never ridden one, knows nothing about them, or wants to try one, I will extend an offer to take you on a ride and let you try mine out, and you can shoot some archery on my range as well this area and never been in a saddle, you are welcome to try mine. Being able to try something before making an investment helps to make an informed decision.

Wish everyone a great hunting season and future success. Cheers

Thank you for your Research and posting this information for all. Federal land does get tricky. Especially when hunting, since much of the state laws apply, but sometimes with some Federal regulations and sometimes each land manager has their own guidance as well. Best to talk to someone if you are not sure.
I use the bikes on 2 different Federal Wildlife Refuges and print and carry all of the recent posted language with me in case. Luckily I have never had to use them.

I hope it does help. It was suggested to carry the literature published with me because of the lack of clarification. I am still waiting on a last phone call from my district roads manager “supposed” to have the list with classification for the trails being labeled. With that said. I am also waiting on two responses sent in by another supervisor to clarify use on a maintained form motorized travel gravel road considering the published literature is directed at trails. They kinda got the cart before the horse in published documents. There has been allot of helpful people from the USFS. I apologized for being annoying but they expressed their job was to serve us as the public. So I encourage people to ask. I was even told it makes no sense to only allow them on motorized roads when I can drive my pick up to the same spot. If I hear anything I will update but at this point. I’m just waiting to hear back. I may or may not.

This whole discussion about under/over 750w amounts to the same as the gov't saying dudes can get pregnant. It is a bicycle with a motor otherwise known as a motorcycle.

Use the MVUM for local district for now. They show you where you can ride and are free. Also, ask the patrol captain or LEO that would actually be there and have officer discretion. Unless there is a multitude of other game/cfr violations, i doubt they really give a rip about a buzzy bike. Those guys are looking for drugs, DV, wanted felons, theft, vandalism and s&r’s. Aint got time for bike paper work. Now an FPO might but they have no arresting authority and can only make a voluntary stop if you know what i mean.

This was doubled down on by a ranger. If your out there destroying property and being unruly and I interpreted it this way “Being stupid “and not a good steward of the land. They will do something. I will also repeat. They are really good about talking to you. Returning phone calls and actually trying to help.

oh here is a little tid bit that came up in conversation since I disperse camp. Be aware of your fire if you build one. Not following a burn ban will get you in deep doo doo especially if you start a fire.

Good call, anyone “maintaining or “attending” campfire is probable cause for a CFR violation notice based on sub part B CFR. if the burn bans/cfr is in effect. Same with allowing it to escape ring or maintaining it in such a way that unburned fuel is adjacent and outside of ring

Yep we are lucky enough that primitive camping is allowed on WMA. But this year they implemented a check in online system. Guessing too many people destroying stuff or being stupid. Lots of people using WMA as campgrounds. We have some Islands I am planning on hitting with the boat and just camping for the weekend while we hunt. Drift wood and sand beaches make for a great way to have a fire and be safe.

Hee, Hee. Right. Yet these same people feel perfectly fine using thier finely tuned compound bows instead of a recurve or god forbid, a GUN! Because, you know, that’s the way THEY like to hunt. As far as I know, an Ebike has never killed a single deer. Lol.

New CFRs for my local nf were signed aug 1. Motorized vehicles operating on FSR in violation of state law. This could be used in ebike scenario in the future. Haha its starting. They know the trends. Same with drones at recreation sites and ,of course, in wilderness

So. In nearly a week since prodding the issue. I have new information. Well it’s observation. Went looking today. Some parking areas have signs that say National Forest - no ebikes or pedal assisted on trails or behind gates. My wife looked at me and said well you pushed the right buttons. I told her well at least we know they addressed the gray area. They were so fresh the saw dust was still laying there and the bolts super shiney. So that answers that. I guess. This is in the bent creek area. It’s the only place I’ve seen the signs but it’s only at parking areas.

Big regs a comin boys

Ah. After I seen the amount of trail damage the regular mtn bikers caused yesterday it’s a moot point to me anymore. They have to have a study for ebikes but already have trails dug up and mangled by standard mtn bikes. I seen it with my own two eyes.
