I shot a hog in 2013 and I’ve had the itch ever since. It’s gotten worse now that I have a good mobile setup and a camp-worthy Tacoma. I’ve heard SE Ohio is kinda ground zero for hogs here, and I’ve heard that they’re actually all over the state by now, which is a hotly debated topic when you ask local hunters and farmers. but I’m curious who’s tried/succeeded on oinkers in the buckeye state? You don’t gotta drop any pins or nothin’, but let’s see if we can’t help each other out a little, yeh? I’m gunna need something to do in the Spring and Summer besides get mosquito bites and mow the lawn, and I don’t fish much, so hogs seemed like the natural progression between deer seasons. Plus I love pork almost as much as I love my children. Ohio pig hunters: go!

I,ve hunted Gallia Co for many yrs and even though the DNR says they are there, I've not seen it. I'd rather hunt pigs than whitetails if I could find a place for free range hunting.

Just go hunt any TX AR LA MS AL GA FL public land and you’ll find all the hogs you want.
Fair point…if I wasn’t a trophy husband 6/7 days a week I would absolutely do this. I’m looking to make some more local public land trips this off-season, though I have open invites in GA and TX I might have to cash in on some day.

I hear Vinton County is the place to see them for sure. Lots of public in that area. I would like to try and do Superior WA or one of the surrounding tracts.

Ik they say there are their and I hear rumors of them hear and there. I killed two probably 10 years ago while they were somewhat abundant for the area. They went in with drop traps and helicopters and knocked em out. I’ve heard Zalesiki has some but I can’t confirm that. Good luck with your search!

I've lived in Southern Ohio my entire life stomped around a ton of the public in Lawrence Scioto and Gallia counties and never seen so much as a track I'm sure there 1 0r 2 out there someplace but not worth traveling any kind of distance to hunt them.

I live in Gallia County and I hunt and trap Gallia, jackson, Lawrence and Vinton counties.. Also am a nuisance wildlife trapper and no calls on them in 30 years though legally i cant do anything about them because of the way rules are and would have to refer them to the USDA who have cleaned em out. There arent hogs here anymore. If there are people are being very quiet about them.

Zaleski was on the list of probable locations I found. It’s funny, ppl from Northern Ohio that I talk to are way more convinced there are hogs all over the state than the ppl who live where they’re “supposed” to be lol. This is why I’m so interested…I want to find a unicorn.

I’d think anyone who hunts private land won’t share much info if they do have pigs around, they’d wanna keep that resource quiet. You seem to be a credible source though. And you’re right in the counties that are supposed to have confirmed populations, so I’d have to imagine you’d see one if they were around. But now you’ve just made me more motivated :tonguewink:.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife does have a page listing the confirmed hogs on public land. Seems like most of them are around the various vinton county wildlife areas. Which were around some canned hunt places and some outfitters. Im sure some of the hogs that are in the area are on-purpose escapes.

My bff lives right by a big wma. This neighbor lives on the actual boundary fence and the neighbor is a butcher and raises hogs for slaughter......the wild pigs from the forest break into his property and fornicate....then they all go back into the forest....I don't know how many generations for the pigs to change their appearance but I don't think it takes many.

Resource??? They are a pest and need eliminated. If they were on my place, I'd declare war on them.

I wish we had them here!! I would think if they were a problem, every redneck w/a gun rack in his truck would keep them killed off ?
Yeah, just like coyotes right? Everyone want them dead but they can't be eradicated. Once you have them, you are stuck with them. Only difference is coyotes don't damage the habitat. Hogs destroy habitat and crops.

I’ve lived and hunted in southern Ohio for quite some time. This year will be my 20th season. Although I’ve never hunted in vinton county I’ve driven tons of miles through there and around Zaleski since 2020 for my job. I’ve never seen one and the locals have very few stories of seeing any. Even the local vinton county dnr rep told me last year there is a very small population, if any. I wouldn’t waste your time.

Well, pork is a resource, and there’s no doubt the idea of a war on hogs has its “merits” in the recreational-outdoorspeople category lol. Otherwise, you’re 100% right from an ecological standpoint.
