Anyone hunting out west this year?

Im currently sitting at Elk camp waiting for opening day. I don't have the PTO to take off a week or two, so instead I grabbed a starlink satellite and am working remotely from basecamp during the work week. I figure I'll scout and setup over sign/wallows in the evenings like I would whitetail, and then backpack in and hunt them hard on the weekends. I'll be out here the whole month.

Any feedback on how well the internet box works? Cost? Can you take a video web meeting or just respond to email, browse, etc?

Hopefully you use that starlink to post some stories as well! Good luck that's an awesome idea to file away for when my kids are older.

Edit: womp womp no starlink for me at home (yet)

I'm actually pretty dumbfounded at how well this thing works! I work in tech so I have some pretty strict requirements on my internet connection. My bandwidth fluctuates anywhere from 100Mbps to 20Mbps down and about 40Mbps to 10Mbps upload. Pings average about 40ms to 70ms

Just the other day I was troubleshooting an issue over zoom with a vendor while connected over VPN with zero hiccups. I am just as capable of doing my work from basecamp as I am from home. The only caveat is that you need a pretty clear view of the north sky as obstructions will cause connection drops on regular intervals.

As far as power consumption goes, you're looking at roughly 40 to 80 watts of power draw (depending on if the morning dew has frozen over your dish). With the starlink, laptop, second monitor, and phone charger I'm pulling about 150W of power on average.

As far as cost goes, the starlink hardware cost me about 600, and a monthly charge of 135 (added cost of roaming enabled). Since I concocted this scheme starlink now offers a RV package which is a little cheaper per month for about the same functionality/bandwidth.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with the connection, this will probably power my remote work hunting season for here on out (both out west and at home).

So there's a way to sidestep the waiting line, I won't go into specifics, but it involves having a different service address than your shipping address. You can Google the rest ;)

You are doing what I’m dreaming about, I want to learn to code to do this an fish

I’m headed out to Colorado next week with muzzleloader tags for elk and mule deer. It’s going to be a fun hunt!

Have to look into the Starlink option for next year!

Good luck on that muzzleloader hunt! The rut muzzleloader hunt is on my bucket list.

I guess I can say I am, seeing I live in western Montana, already have an antelope in the freezer, working on my elk and deer now. Good luck to everyone, and to those who want to hunt the west, just do it, make it happen and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I’ve had Starlink as my primary internet since March. It’s much better than my DSL that I previously had. No better hardwired options for the time being. Speeds are near cable internet speeds. I used it to take proctored exams online for school that use Zoom without issue. Streaming works pretty flawlessly most of the time. Only really down time is if there is a storm and it’s raining heavy, like satellite TV. Can’t speak for the mobile version but I think as long as you have a clear view of the sky it would be a viable option. It costs me $110 a month. Had to spend like $600 for the equipment.

Me neither!!!
Me neither but I said screw it and am currently buying gear and researching possible locations for a archery mule deer hunt in Colorado. If I don’t draw I’ll buy an otc elk.
Figure if I spend a bunch of cash on gear I will feel obligated to use it and remove my biggest excuse for not going. Already cleared it with the work boss and home boss.

Just got back from 8 hunt days in Wyoming. We had a great time. We camped 4 miles in and were smack dab in the middle of the elk activity.

We probably never went 6 hours without hearing a bugle. Unfortunately I never called a bull all the way in. I passed a cow at 7 yards day 2 and that was as close as I got.

We still had a great time even though we were wet about 1/2 the time. I wish I could get the tag again next year. It took 4 pp to get it this time. With the possible changes in nonres quotas 5 years may not be enough for a next time. I'd be 70 or moreScreenshot_20220926-094447_Gmail.jpgScreenshot_20220926-095556_Drive.jpg before it happened again. It was physically grueling enough at 64.

@Phopkins , your hunt sounds similar to mine down in CO. Hunted 6 days. First day was the only day I wasnt in elk, that day was in yellow jackets and benadryl. One thing that was way different, I only heard 3 bugles and they were all before daylight. Over the other 5 days of hunting I had clear open shots on elk 3 of the days, 30 yards or less. The problem was none of them were legal bulls to match my tag. In total I was within 35 yards of 25-30 elk in a week of hunting. It is hard to be disappointed with that and the encounters and experiences were awesome. But at the end of the day eating a tag sucks. Got rained on 5 of the 6 days too but nothing too severe, just enough to be annoying.

I just saw this thread. I hunted 20 days for elk. I’ll pile a bunch of days for mulies too. Maybe some Mtn lion later this year. There is always a possible cow elk hunt too. But I’m cheating and live in Colorado. I hope you all have good luck if you decide to come west.
