Anyone in Georgia want to go Elk Hunt?

You should listen to Kifarucast. Aron Snyder KNOWS his backcountry hunting. The one podcast him and someone else said get out of your head that you will go to an OTC and DIY a 350 bull anytime soon. Not impossible, but not probable. He said, plan on shooting any elk and youll have a good time, plan on killing a giant in OTC and its a real pipe dream.

Im waiting one or two more years and then im starting in the west. I probably wont start on elk, that tag is expensive and I have a bass fishing addiction to feed too. Im looking at tags I can get with ease that everyone isnt beating the door down.
I passed on a little 4x4 bull in Colorado. I’ve hunted with several people that were from Colorado since then and every one of them told me I was stupid for not shooting it. I passed because it wasn’t what I was there to shoot. I also flew out and decided it was as much work to pack off the mountain and get on the plane with. I’m still happy about my decision to pass and my only regret is not going back sooner.

Your opinion is the only one that matters on your hunt. Effort is a factor not always considered, it's one I consider for sure. I wouldn't shoot a raghorn myself, maybe a cow though.

September is coming quick . Im going out there for meat. If it's a bull or cow I'll be happy either way.
Just remember... Don't pass up something on day 1 that you would be happy with on your last day. I have had this lead to more tag soup than anything else I've done.

this is very true. I've lived in and hunted elk in Idaho for almost 40 years. My dad has also, and between brothers, uncles and cousins we could add another combined 50 years or so. I have shot one elk I would consider BIG, a 6x7, we have maybe a dozen other regular sized 6 point bulls, and lots of spikes, smaller 6 points, raghorn 4 or 5 point, etc. If you shoot a legal bull (or cow) you have done better than most hunters that year and be happy. Even a small elk is a ridiculous amount of meat.

This is probably a long shot but is anyone down here in Georgia interested in doing a DIY OTC ELK Hunt? Looking for some likeminded folks who wanna go chase some elks out west . So far my huntin buddies say they wanna but won't commit or don't want that much adventure . So that brings me here . I'm talking about road tripping out there , backpacking up some mountains and having the most fun we possibly can hunting.

This is also a post to find more reliable diehard hunting friends who are near by I live in Atlanta and drive all over to fish and hunt. Who wants to go?

I have been trying to convince some friends do go out west as well with Colorado being an option. Something keeps coming up preventing it.
I'm in Marietta.

Don’t let that stop you. I definitely wouldn’t pack a camp way in by myself again. Probably wouldn’t do it with friends if I only had a week off. It’s an inspiring idea to envision packing your camp in so you can go farther than anyone else. It can work great but if the elk aren’t there you have spent most of a day packing in camp and will spend most of another packing it out. I think on my next trip I will just spend the first couple hours in the morning hiking in the dark. Maybe take enough for a one night minimalist camp but not everything for a week. That will get you farther in than most especially if you get a mile off the trail.

One great article I read (can't remember where now) talked about scouting at night, driving to a spot, parking the car for 15 to 30 min, bugling, listen for a reply, move to another spot a mile or 2 away, rinse and repeat till you find some bulls. He said bulls will answer much more often in the middle of the night, and there is no doubt if it's an elk or another hunter.

I've never tried it but it sounds like a solid idea. If I was hunting a new area on a trip, couldn't pre-scout etc, I would definitely try that to get into an active elk area from day one.

Gonna leave from Atlanta around the second week of September .12th till maybe the 30th , headed towards Colorado,Driving. If anyone is seriously interested in going shoot me a message . At the moment going solo but would be stoked to find someone to go with. Planning on basecamp day pack hunting/ overnight bivy camp if needed to. 3 months away!

Sounds like a good trip. I envy y’all that can take more than a week straight. You should have time to get things figured out. Good luck.

Man I have made that long drive out west every year since 2014, have DIY hunted Idaho, for Mule deer and elk. Even did a ID and MT swing a few years! Have been very successful, in the past i’ve Driven home with huge antlers strapped onto the roof rack of my FJ and pulling a trailer with 4 big coolers of Frozen elk meat! Sadly this year I am going to miss the action due to surgery last week on my leg. I love the drive out west , have done it solo so many times, have met friends now who live in the areas I hunt and to think all I did was open a map and throw a dart! Please let me know how I can help.

I’m in Fitzgerald.

I would be a chicken killin *** if I lived there!!!

I surveyed something down there years ago and I ain’t never seen so many chickens before in my life. Damn things were wandering around everywhere

Dont want to hijack thread, but looking to sell a "Cabela's Prestige Frame & Harness" for $200 if anyone is interested. (Listed in classifieds.) Will be in upstate South Carolina over July 4th if someone wants to connect.

I went last year for the first time. Way different than Iowa. I am planning on going again this year. Hopefully I can go the 20th to around the 28 or 29th. I want to avoid the muzzleloader competition this year.

I’m wondering about the muzzleloader season
In the middle of archery season, it’s when I can go so I’ll have to deal it .

Yeah, it will be a factor but like most things go where the majority of people are too lazy to go and it should be good.
