I hunted the West Elk Wilderness area near gunnison. It was a draw area but required a total of 0 points to draw. I’m not sure it it’s changed after a couple of hard winters but there were several draw areas that required no points to draw.Yeah I’m just going to OTC areas, Gunnison is draw

Truth, I just got back a couple weeks ago from an AZ Mule Deer hunt. my brother and I tracked 65 miles of hiking and over 800 floors in 7 days. Just to miss at 60 yards on the second to the last day. Heart breaking an humbling. Western hunting is definitely not for the faint of heart.Traveling to hunt deer vs elk ain't even close. Completely different ball game.
Especially if there are plenty of deer where you already live.
If you choose to back country hunt, the mental part will fold you up like a lawn chair if you aren't prepared.

I’ve been looking into before seeing this post. I think they have lottery hunts in KY and just found out about TN. I’m still new to hunting but this is on the bucket list. What would one need gear wise to go chase these boys out west. Only crew I’ve ever really seen film with some detail has been the Hushin crew. And Cam Haynes, Joe Rogan type of thingThis is probably a long shot but is anyone down here in Georgia interested in doing a DIY OTC ELK Hunt? Looking for some likeminded folks who wanna go chase some elks out west . So far my huntin buddies say they wanna but won't commit or don't want that much adventure . So that brings me here . I'm talking about road tripping out there , backpacking up some mountains and having the most fun we possibly can hunting.
This is also a post to find more reliable diehard hunting friends who are near by I live in Atlanta and drive all over to fish and hunt. Who wants to go?

Archery only for me. No boom stick until I have harvested my fair share with the bow. Yea the $600 tag is one to think about. I’ve heard to put back at least $2500 if you going out west.I’ve been researching this exact idea over the last several weeks. Has been a dream of mine for several years now and would love to try and plan a trip with some folks. I’m from NW Georgia, Calhoun to be exact. Are you trying to archery hunt? Or use the boom stick. There’s so much information out there that I’ve really just felt overwhelmed with a lot of it. I’m thinking about just learning on the fly. However, 4-600$ is a lot to potentially eat a tag haha. The adventure would be worth it though I think.
There is nothing like it. The only way I can describe it is like turkey hunting on steroids. I went to Idaho last fall. I had the time of my life. It was guided and I learned real quick that you dont need a guide to do it. Its not easy but you can go many times for what one guided hunt costs. I am looking to go back out west if I can find someone else to do it with. Archery for me. Anyone in the Virginia area looking for a hunting partner for out west let me know. I am not even worried about being the shooter. The experience and sights out there are unreal.I’ve been researching this exact idea over the last several weeks.
