Arrow Building - Recommendations and Pitfalls - 2022

I had a difficult time finding gateway rayzr in solid colors last time I went to restock....ended up with true flight 2" feather and they are on par with gateway.....

Why on earth are barred feathers 3x more expensive than same feather solid color?

Production turkeys are almost entirely white any more would be my guess. That means more production cost to add bars.

A bag of yellow or pink feathers is 35 and I don't see any turkeys like that

Choosing wing is just picking which way u want it to rotate just like buying vanes....I ignore the "natural" rotation and just get right wing to go with bevel on the broadheads....there was natural arrow rotation talk recently but don't remember the thread

To include in this discussionas it is cooking currently,

Has anyone gone through the effort of cutting then paper tuning, and cutting them paper tuning? I.e., Have you tried it with, say, three arrows until you find a sweet spot?

I have with my trad bow. Unnecessary for modern compound bows. I error on the stiff side with spine software and haven’t had any issues.

Florida is always dry as a bone too....

They get wet and look ugly till they dry. I haven't noticed any irregular flight dry vs wet. Going on 3 seasons with same feathers

Tuned bow and tuned arrow and high foc% allow for wet feather broadhead flight? I don't know....pretty sure they sell stuff to keep them dry if u worried about it ....Walmarts got campdry

My advice would be to cut them as short as you feel comfortable with.

Square both ends!

Use the smallest vanes you can get to keep broadheads flying true.

Make sure your bow is tuned before fletching up an arrow to try.

Have throw away towels and qtips at the ready to wipe up epoxy and what not.

Clean everything really well after test fits and before gluing.

At typical hunting ranges, I prefer a little more vane and helical than minimally necessary. The reason is that no matter how good you are, anyone can make a bad form shot if a monster buck comes in or they are in an awkward angle or shooting with a lot of layers on.

The advantages I see to small vanes are doesn't slow down as much at extended ranges, higher FOC, quieter in flight, easier to get cable/rest clearance, and less likely to deflect off a branch. But the advantage of better flight control of a fixed head out to my hunting max yardage (40 yards) trumps that for me.

that stuff works in light/intermittent rain.....if you want to be in the stand during a good rain and be ready for when it stops, then nothing I've tried (other than keeping the feathers covered) will keep them dry enough to still control a broadhead

i shot trad bow and feathers for years and have tried all the powders, sprays, and even home recipes (like tire spray with silicone) and it all fails at a certain point and once the feather is laying over like a bad toupee then they don't control a broadhead at all

so glad i can shoot vanes now out of my compound

Recently, I've purchased arrows and all of the necessary components, except vanes and nocks.

My question what are some recommendations / Pitfalls to consider?

Equipment list:

Arrow spinner/ squaring jig $25
Diamond saw blades, used with a drill $12
Cold ferril tite and 4k epoxy $6
Tape measure
Sharpie silver

Arrow description: DL 28.5" Foc 16.8%

Easton Aftermath 340 $45/6
75 brass Inserts. $20/12
Magnus Stinger 4 125 grain $40/3

Ebay sources

Check out the AAE max stealth vanes. I just started a new dozen these things are great jmo,I fetched up a couple just for testing purposes with a pretty drastic right helical probably the best flying arrows i have seen in a long time. Like a Lazer. Very impressive

agreed.....are you using the prep kit? many folks that don't have them fall off eventually

i use them with the kit and, while a pain, it works great
