Arrow setup to break heavy bone

We are on the same page, brutha

I killed a doe a few years back that had blown my cover multiple times previously. Once she realized I was there she stopped in a severe quartering to arrangement and in some decent cover. I was NOT going to let her escape so I had already made up my mind to shoot her where she stood. I opted for the shot just inside of her front right shoulder and exiting behind her left.....

Heavy arrow with a heavy 2 blade cut on contact head. She didn’t stand a chance and died under 40 yards away from massive carnage. I’ll take that every day.
I had a similar experience.....just opposite. Doe dropped and spun so quick I had similar except arrow in the back and out the front......high velocity blood spray and quick expiration.....my arrow hit the inside of the scapula and because of the steep angle between the bone and broadhead it skipped and redirected out the neck at an upward angle exiting up by her head.....the arrow traveled inside the deer roughly 3/4 the length of the whole body and total pass through and stuck in the mud....
The only other deer I hit with an arrow was with a twizzler and expandable.....that was the very first time I ever shot an arrow at a deer so I was a little excited....I watched the arrow hit a little high and back but still IMO a good hit in the vitals....I got maybe 6" penetration and she run off. I found the arrow with a slightly bent ferrule and 1 blade mangled up.....I never found the deer. I image the 1 blade hit a rib and just dumped all the energy. The little blood I did find had some bubbles so I guess 1 lunged....

My new setup is 580 grain arrow with cutthroat or tuffhead 200 grain head at 22% foc ethics insert and outsert. Should penetrate most anything on a deer. Arrow is running about 240 fps. .61 momentum

Same here, I’ll take the bet. I’m shooting 580 grains with %17 percent FOC because I can but I’m willing to drop it back to 14% FOC and 530 grains to win just about any ole internet bet .

Math is not gonna lie however not all momentum is the same for penetrating heavy bones. Momentum from mass will out penetrate another arrow with the Same momentum that is lighter but faster

I’m not sure what that has to do with an 11 month old comment in good fun but yes, math doesn’t lie. 2 + 2 does not equal bananas.

I went with a heavy arrow setup, last fall and it paid off with my first buck kill from the ground. :)
Obsession Fusion 7 @ 55 lbs. and a 29" DL. Gold Tip Hunter XT 400 @ 27", 18% FOC and 470 TAW.
I got a heart shot on him at 27 yards with a Magus Snuffer, he ran 30 yards and dropped over.

This year I will be shooting an Elite Ritual 30 @ 60 lbs. and a 29" DL. Gold Tip Hunter XT 300 @ 27", 22% FOC and a 565 TAW.

Get a 500 fps Xbow and call it a day lol. That'll get it done with any broadhead

Thanks, but I prefer my hand drawn compound bow. :) I enjoy the challenge.

I have a Ravin R10, but it requires a 100 gr. tip weight. It's rated at 400 fps. Altering what the manufacturer recommends will and/or can be dangerous. I know, because I've called the Ravin Tech Line and spoke with the engineers.

I am shooting 550 gr arrows at 16% foc out of a 72lb PSE xf30…. With some solid broadheads. It should do okay.
Shooting 72 lbs. will allow you to use a much heavier TAW and higher FOC.
You could easily get away with a 650+ grain arrow with a 22% plus FOC. Talk about "blowing thru" a whitetail deer...wow!
