Attempting a diy platform

This is a stick welder I am talking about. If you are a professional welder then you know more than me.
He probably should know that from the slag inclusions....:)

I doubt I am going to be standing on a piece of rebar welded to a railroad track nut but you never know. :)
Sorry! Thought that was your attempt at a platform. I was trying to give ya the benefit of the doubt.

Just out of interest, how many hours have the non-pro welders here put in before feeling confident to fab platforms and stuff? I've been looking at getting a mig machine to learn on, but between hobbies I'm not sure I have the time to devote 100 hours to learning on scrap.

I am far from pro but do have to weld on occasion for work. With a fairly cheap flux core mig welder there is a very short learning curve. A few minutes of practice and maybe a youtube video and I'd say a platform could be made in short order.

While I think your right that you could fab something up.

I think some of the pros (likely have "weld" in username) are trying to say is the same investigation, risk analysis, and respect of danger should be given to welding a platform as climbing a tree and all the other dangers as elevating hunting involve.

I have stick welded on a 225 amp AC transformer, a 250 amp AC/DC transformer, Mig with flux core wire only on a 160 amp Lincoln and TIG on a Eastwood AC/DC with argon shielding gas. Mig is very easy compared to the others. I probably only have 150 hours experience but nothing I welded failed so far.
The biggest mistake I made at first was not making sure the base metal was melted along with the rod. A consequence of that is to make sure you apply more heat to the thicker part. If I don't see the base metal melting I continue applying heat to one spot until I do. Am I doing it wrong?

Well put. Definitely a more refined way of saying it.

I am about done with my DIY platform. I ended up putting nuts and bolts as the standoff contact points. This allows me to adust for twisted trees.
The boat strap is the sh!t, its a tad short at 3' so I may have to make it longer. I plan on removing the S hood for a look to go over my DIY versa wahser button

other than that it's solid and works well.

You are right, I will need to beef that up. I just had some material in the garage so I start sticking it together.
I have a 10 day trip to Maryland Nov 1 and had a predator lined up via private sale and it fell through.
How was your Maryland trip? I live here. I was out Friday the 8th and the bucks were running. I saw 4 in a little over 2 hours.
