Your best resource is HammockForums.net. You can learn everything you need to know by snooping around. My advice would be to spring for a cuben fiber tarp. That's my favorite piece of gear and it weighs nothing. It's expensive, but worth it.

You should really consider adding a hammock to your arsenal. Sleeping on the ground is for neanderthals.
