Balloons IN the actual bed

Ha, I used to do something similar when I was in that hunting club. I made a big turkey foot on a stick and would stamp it all over turnouts where I knew there weren't likely to be any birds. It never failed that guys would camp out there and then scratch their heads that the birds were "quiet", lol.
My father was a welder and he made a set of steel deer hooves that u stap on your feet. They were ridiculous big like the size of an elk and he would mess with his friends lol good times . I believe they are still around somewhere. I'll have to bring back the tradition

I got out this weekend to set up some trail cams in a new location I found post season that looked promising. Not long into this scouting session I found 3 beds in tall fern plants under a pine. Set a camera on it and continued on. About 75 yards later I found a balloon. Now I’m really feeling good about this spot. After finding the ballon I could only go 30 more yards and it got too thick to continue. It transitioned into thick saplings which I remember thinking back in February that it would probably be impossible with foliage and it was. Can’t wait for the season to start.

I’ve always been on the fence about buying into it. This past year I found more mature bucks and more Mylar balloons. Maybe it’s a thing

I wonder how balloons fall back to Earth. Quickly or do they slowly lose pressure and float around riding thermals and currents until they often land on thermal hubs and other wind guiding features? I hunt a small plateau with thick cover. Tons of sign and have found several balloons there.

This is something i find intriguing. I’m down with a broke leg. This may be something I look into. I can see where it is feasible. Now that I sit here. I found a mylar balloon on a bedding ridge of what turned out to be a 148 gross. I have found a mylar balloon in the bed of this first deer. I also found a Mylar balloon in this second picture also

I'm gonna start planting blue balloons in the woods! :tearsofjoy:
Ive actually done this
lmao keeping the believers away from the actual spots.lmao.

Im not knocking anyone at all but, from my experiences and knowledge.
I have never put to much emphasis on this balloon theory.
It makes sense but there are way
too many factors that have to come into play with letting a balloon on the ground effect my hunting spots.
Does it make sense with thermals and winds? Sure, in a way it does but, I literally find balloons everywhere.
Found one last week in my side yard lol
When I do find balloons I may find a few beds around 10% of the time.
I want my spots based on food, winds, previous data collected, and what time of year I should be hunting there.

My dad also used to say good spots to hunt are right inside the woods off major roadways where a deer crossing sign is.
lol my pop was nuts. I told him to go try it and let us know how you do.
Lmao

Actually that isn’t bad advice at all. I’ve used deer crossing signs to confirm terrain features that are worth scouting for starting points when finding new areas to hunt.

No i know and agree but I would never base my whole hunting theories or tactics off of wherever i find balloons or see deer crossing signs. Lol.

I think it has a lot to do with how many balloons you have to work with. If you live near a major metro area the quantity of balloons going up and falling to Earth is going to randomize the results. If you are finding hundreds of balloons, then balloons will likely not be a good indicator. If you live in an area like where I do, the 8 to 10 balloons you find in the woods each year often correspond to areas where the wind currents tend to be favorable to buck bedding. You can't take a balloon's presence at face value, however. The sign has to be there to back it up. I would guess that 80% of the balloons I find are associated with buck bedding and good deer sign. Is it a thing? I think if you have a small quantity of balloons to work with pay attention when you see one, if you have hundreds, it will probably not be much help.

Good point

I don’t think any of us are advocating basing our entire hunting strategy on where we find balloons. Its just a cool happening/coincidence!

At the three spots mentioned there are picnic areas known for birthday cook out so that may be why I’ve noticed that. I have picture of deer other places and have not ever found a balloon.
My dad says a beer can is more possible than finding balloons. Think about how many times you have found a random beer can in a laurel
Thicket. Not saying to hunt that or it has anything at all to do with a deer.

Probably has a lot to do with the drinking habits of loggers, lol.

Yes, generally if you are finding what can be considered trash near where people go, I would say to discount it. Where I am finding these balloons are miles from where anyone would be having a birthday party. Very rarely do I find trash out in the deep woods. Occasionally, when I do it is an empty can of Vienna sausages or Beenie Weinies or a coke can where someone hunted and left some trash from lunch. I also find empty doe in heat aerosol cans here and there, but not too many.

The picnic areas are not close to where I find these. They are in the same road but for example I park 2 miles past it and walk 3.2 to where I’ve found the balloons. The other is on the other side of a mountain where I walk around 2.5. So I’m not sure if that matters but it’s not really allot of balloons just been one

Those may indicate where dropping thermals converge and may have good buck sign nearby.
