I went scouting today in some public near thee house. Big woods in the foothills. I was following the edge behind some houses and saw a small bamboo patch about 25 ft in diameter that is at the end of a cudulsac and I thought I would check it out. It appeared there were old rubs everywhere on lots of bamboo trees. My questions is does anyone have any experience with bamboo and deer? Do they just rub there or bed or eat it etc...? Only bamboo around I have seen and still not sure they were buck rubs but sure looked like it. Any info would be nice.

They sure look like buck rubs to me. I have never seen any bamboo around here, but I have seen that exact same thing in small grove of similar sized sumac trees. Like a 10'x 10' area of sumacs with a rub on every other tree. One of these days I'm gonna throw a camera on one and see what goes on in there.

Perfect bedding for deer. Good cover and if anything comes into the bamboo, they can hear every step. No sneaking through bamboo. I was in a lease of hardwoods bottomland. I always sought out bamboo areas to scout. Not only is it good security but it also forms an edge affect in monotonous hardwood bottom land.

They do not eat it that I am aware of. Deer prefer herbaceous plants to grass plants. Bamboo is grass. I do however see them with some regularity make rubs on bamboo and scrapes in front of it

We don't have a lot of bamboo here, but we have a lot of river cane. Deer will bed in it if the pigs don't beat them to it. Deer prefer the edges, pigs prefer to get all up in it.

Also, for some reason that stuff holds snakes like a sponge holds water.

Lots of rats and mice in it for some reason.
Yeah, I guess it's drier in the stuff than it is in the surrounding swamp. Maybe the "leaves" make good nest material or something.

I just know if somebody told me they'd give me a hundred dollar bill for every snake I found, I'd go light a cane thicket on fire and pick 'em up as they swam the river.

What I would say and I've hunted where it is prevalent. Deer don't eat it.
