Must be nice to be going moose hunting! Let alone on two! I got passed for the 19th year in a row... Shot one as a sub 2 years ago though, in the head, .300 R.U.M., no tracking.
Baiting Newfield/Shapleigh area down here. Baiting is a lot of work and I wasn't even really prepared this season. My barrel isn't set up the way I usually do it. I didn't have jigsaw blades so I couldn't cut my standard round hold, had to go square with my skil-saw. Didn't have a sealed drum so I had to wedge a cut top on the top. I don't like doing that because when they peel it off I have terrible luck with rain, and drilling holes in the bottom never seems to work.
I'm running two baits, using a mixture of things. Attractants are anise, vanilla, molasses, liquid smoke, cooking grease, peanut butter and used fry oil (a little different than the cooking grease). Bait is doughnuts from Dunkins and a nut mix from Days Bear Bait. The nut mix is shelled pistachios, walnuts, almonds, peanuts, macadamia, and some other ones. Mixed with chocolate covered espresso beans, m&m's, chocolate covered raisins and candied pretzels. That protein is obviously the fat builder they are looking for.
Baiting takes so much time and energy that I decided to just spend the money next year and go on a hunt up at Katahdin Iron Works. I'll actually save money in the long run and a bunch of time!
