Beast Stand

In the meantime the quibble about a treestand, by some guys who admittedly don't want to saddle hunt, is front page propaganda on SH? I think on AT or the Beast forum this topic would be more relevant.

You don't have to hang out if you aren't interested. Don't want to break your purity pledge.

I understand what you are saying, but there is so many topics on this forum from Jokes -Truck builds... and everything between and most of it has nothing to do with a saddle.

Go start this thread on the beast. See how fast you get banned bringing LWCG or Andraes name up.

Do you feel the same about the .5, 1.0, the hush and all the other stands that get talked about. Some people will use stands for a hybrid setup so it is just as relevant as any other thread about stands.

yep… thats it.

Excellent pack...that is what I used all last year but mine is a Gen1.

I think LW/Beast/LWCG are all good stands! Every one has different opinions about stands. I used an Assault 2 and full LW sticks for years. I still think the LW cast aluminum Assault 2 platform is the best platform ever made except for weight. I could go back to my Assault 2 and 3 full sticks and 1 aider and kill just as many deer.Screenshot_20200923-030831_Gallery.jpg

Purity pledge, you're a riot. Coming from the biggest beast leg humper this side of Wisco, who has no interest in a saddle. Bro, if I hurt your feelings speaking truth, well, too bad. I read thru a couple of pages, but when I saw you arguing like a little girl with some others about the merits of this stand vs. LWCG, with zero bearing on saddle hunting for about 17+ pages now, I just feel like I need to call a spade a spade.

Neat. I own a 0.5 and have no plans to buy a beast stand. Sorry a saddle didn't fit my needs. If you want to refund my membership, I guess I'll see myself out.

Till then, I'm happy to talk hunting gear. If you think this thread belongs in another section, take it up with a mod.

Wow this thread really got derailed. Seems a few here really hold a grudge. No need to name names as it’s pretty darn obvious every single time. Time to let it go boys. Life’s too short to carry that much hate all the time.

Nope. Top of stick. Toting around a 3+ lb platform totally defeats the point of saddle hunting imo

I tried saddle hunting with my SitDrag using 1 screw in peg and my top stick.. I’ve never been so glad a hunt ended. Even got busted by a group of 4 does on the last day of deer season years back, probably 2016??

Personally I’d rather carry in more weight so I can be comfortable during my hunt. Absolutely nothing is worse than having calf cramps when deer are walking towards you.

Something that makes a considerable difference to me is the stiffness of my boot. If I attempt using my top step with a soft rubber boot, I'm in agony pretty quickly. The whole game changes if I use my stiff Mountain Extremes. It distributes the weight much more evenly across the stiff nylon shank

I agree, your setup of ONE sticks and a saddle sounds incredibly transportable and efficient. I'm impressed you can manage standoff distances of 3.25" or less as a platform. No ROS? Do you have to stand duck footed to weight the shank of your boot(s)?

I'm envious of folks who have mastered minimalism. I could see myself maybe gun hunting off sticks with a JX3, but that's not exactly a minimalist setup, and I don't suspect I would bow hunt well that way.

I guess my abilities and preferences cause me to need some extra foot room for comfort and maneuverability, and these smaller, frankly uncomfortable, "stands" make the saddle relevant to me, particularly for all day hunts, despite the bulkier and heavier transport. Maybe if we could get some comfort built into them, their stock as actual stands would go up in my eyes.

You can change the platform depth, width, and seat height. You can change the size of the seat. You can add pads until it feels like you're sitting on air. You can change everything you'd like about a hang on stand, and you will not be able to impact the single biggest factor in comfort in using a hang on - You can't adjust the angle or distance of the tree from the top/back of the seat.

I've hunted almost exclusively in a JX3 on a ring of squirrel steps since I got the first proto in 2018. At no point did I compromise comfort or maneuverability. The system can be dialed in to about 125% the weight of a normal close to truck saddle setup, and 105% of a trekking deep setup.

I say both of these things as a person who still owns hang ons, and on occasion has a need for them.

But they're both statements of fact, not opinions.

You can add a lumbar support to a treestand or footrests which increases comfort level in a treestand.

Saddle has pros and cons just like a treestand.

I personally hate facing the tree. I feel exposed to my back. It also takes quite a bit more movement to get a shot off. For that reason I feel I need to hunt higher with my saddle.

I didn’t like the JX3 even a little bit. The seat was very firm and uncomfortable. Also felt restricted. The JX3 had a very bad pendulum effect also. You have to setup on the low side of the tree. If you don’t you just flop that way. I would rather hunt on the ground.

Your first statement doesn't offer any evidence contrary to the statement of fact I made - you can't change the angle/distance of the tree from the top of the seat of your hang on. Adding lumbar support can potentially increase comfort, if you have room to put your butt in the optimum position on the tiny hang on seat. Adding a bigger seat to accommodate then presents challenges. Still, you can't change the angle mid sit.

I'm not saying a saddle doesn't have cons. I'm pointing out the single biggest issue with comfort that a hang on user faces - I say this because it's the only one that can't be changed once you've set your stand. All the rest can be remedied to a degree. I think it's a good reminder in the face of quarreling over which hang on is better than another.

I hate facing a tree too. I feel no more exposed than a treestand, though that's a subjective issue. But I hate facing the tree less than I hate not being able to adjust the angle of my back to my hips without my legs falling asleep. A hang on does not allow this to occur. I've yet to have deer spook because of movement in saddle and it cost me a shot. But admittedly, I've only been hunting out of saddles since 2016. I've probably had 100 or so encounters out of a saddle if I had to guess. I have had a handful of instances where I couldn't shoot a deer because of the angle of approach, in relation to my position in the tree. The rate of that occurring is no different than when hunting out of a hang on.

I've met quite a few folks who instantly didn't like the hybrid. I have some ideas on why, but not the thread for it. I know it becomes difficult to shoot out of for shorter guys. I set up on the high side of trees routinely. Surely, it's better to be on the low side, but again, a topic for a different thread.
