I use 3/8"x8" hardened bolt and I have left them in the tree for 3 plus years. When I think they are too short. I go out in the spring with my impact. Back them out to where I want them and they are ready for another 3 years or so. This of course is on private land, where a good amount of our stand locations are not moving year to year. The impact is louder than a vicegrip but I think it is much quicker. And in the spring, I'm not worried about noise.
As long as you get bolts with threads (fine) at the end, they should back out no matter how long you leave them in.
