Biggest deer hunting weakness?

My biggest weakness is that I'm an ape who's hardwired to want other apes to like me. So instead of focusing time/effort/money on the activity/skill/gear that has the largest impact on my success, I spend them on the things that I feel will make other hunters think I'm a good hunter.

The more effective I am at killing the elephant in my brain, the more effective I am at killing other critters in real life.

Second biggest weakness is waking up for morning hunts.
Pics of you as an ape?? You're completely a humanoid with humanoid socialization tendencies. Apes don't kill deer.

Waking up early is getting harder every year for me

My weakness…truthfully, I hate the damn dark. Yeah, I said it haha. I kill deer, but I wonder if I would kill more if I got in earlier or stayed later. As my buddy always tells me “what can get you in the dark, can get you in the light” but it’s still not my favorite time to lurk around. Although I tough it out sometimes, more often than not it hinders me. Oddly enough, I feel completely fine once I’m settled in the tree, just not while my two feet are on the ground. Which of you grown men are a sissy like me? Don’t lie! Haha
I normally fine in the dark, unless something takes off in front of me. Reminds me off my early hunting days. I hunted within sight of our house. Once I got out of the light of our security lights I was running, dead spring to my stand. Haha still cracks me up. Once I got up the treestand all was well. Keep in mind you could see my house the whole way. Just a stand dad put up for me so they could check on me while I was hunting

Over thinking and picking the wrong tree.
Ive missed more slammers being ten to twenty yards off especially in the last 4-5 years its sick.

Hands down, no question, my biggest weakness is available time. I’m too busy with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to spend adequate time scouting and hunting to become the best hunter I can be. I’m ok with the balance I’ve struck, but it is no doubt holding me back
Same here. I think I’m the best deer hunter I’ve ever been, just in time to throw a couple kids into the mix and ruin my peak potential. I’ve tried to compensate with cell cam scouting, which has taught me a lot. But way too often I call a good day to be in the woods, and watch it happen from my phone 60 miles away, drives me freakin nuts.

I'm the same way about the dark and I don't know why. During turkey season it doesn't bother me, but ever leaf rustle and twig snapping during the fall puts me on edge. I'm in NE Oklahoma, we have nothing but yotes and bobcats for predators (especially where my property is situated) I get in a tree and I feel safe. I'll tough it out and walk in the dark, but I don't enjoy it lol.

This year is going to be a struggle for me. My previous boss didn't care where I took the work truck as long as I didn't break it or do something illegal. So needless to say I hunted weekday evening, scouted during work hours, set cameras, and planted food plots out of that truck. Killed two deer last year and hauled em home in that truck. Won't be getting away with that now with the new company......

Traditionally I re-read the WEB Griffen series "The Corps" every year. Right now I'm in the middle of the Song of Fire and Ice (GOT) series by George RR Martin. I'm checking used bookstores for some of Churchill's autobiographies, and kinda hoping I stumble across something by George W "Nessmuk" Sears.
Reading "The Corps" series in high school was why I joined the Marines. I really should reread the series again.

I've been a night shift worker off and on, probably since I was 17. Overnight security in Section 8 housing projects gets you comfortable in the dark right quick.

I was leaning that way myself but the Coast Guard made me a better deal and I went that route. No regrets, but the occasional "what if?". The series holds up, as do his other series.

I’ve never been hit by one like the dudes in those pics but I’ve been chased up a tree by one before. I’ve also seen one take 3 close range blasts from a 12 gauge and get back up and keep running. They are pound for pound the toughest critters I’ve seen and here in Florida we have a massive population of them
Dang hogs are nasty I’ve never had one come at me yet.

Lucky you. Been fortunate that I havent had a bad run in with a big boar. None of my most western encounters were what I would call a charge but I have had to kick a few in the head. Only full on charge was a sow with a litter of them little sammich pigs. Walked up amongst them in heavy cover and I thought they were blowing out but the sow circled back on me. Got interesting for a minute until I got clear line of sight and skipped a 22lr off her forehead to encourage her to make better life choices.

I have had a handful of encounters that I prolly would have went up a tree but it was either way before daylight or after dark in cutovers. Walk into a sounder and they bust like a covey of quail. Everytime it seems like there is no good direction so I just hold my ground and kick whatever gets too close while trying to find them higher lumens on my headlight lol. Wife bought a sign appropriate for those situations. It says I love Jesus but I cuss a little.

My biggest weakness is having the “tv show” style of hunting stuck in my head. Not bashing any certain person or show. The style just doesn’t fit the hunting I do. Buttt now I’m afraid to do anything. “Cant the same spot too often” “can’t do this or do that. “Oh he busted me, it’s over night as well not go” “can’t go if it’s too hot or too windy” blah blah.

I keep thinking one of these years I am going to just follow their tactics and only hunt the last hour of daylight on Sunday's cause nothing ever gets killed until the last hour of the last day. ;)

I still have a hard time sitting still. Saddle is just so comfy I’ll catch myself swaying and have to remind myself it’s not a hammock.

This.

Also I overpacked. I pack as if I'm going to be a contestant on Alone when I'm actually 15 mins drive from my house, under 2 miles walk to car, and full bar on my cellphones.....
