Ok what do you experienced back country campers recommend for a decent bivy bag to put your sleeping bag in etc. and do you use it all the time with and without a tent? I was looking at the Wiggy's all in one system as a reference. LMK your thoughts.

Edit: I should add that I have a USGI Intermediate Sleeping Bag with the OD bag cover (Down) which I know is heavy and bad when wet but it is super warm. That's why I am asking about a good bivy bag for this or would you go with something more contemporary?

What climate will you be camping in?
FWIW, I prefer the Army bivy cover to most.

Have you considered a bivy shelter instead of a sack? A bit bigger but give you more wiggle room, help moderate moisture better and they don’t increase the thermal characteristics of your sleeping bag as much which might not seem like a big deal but bivy bags can increase the temp by upwards of 10 degrees. Not such a big deal when it’s 20 degrees out but uncool when it’s lots warmer.
If you’re wanting to stick with just a cover my recommendation is the USMC Improved Bivy Cover. They have a built in bug net, are made in the USA by Propper and are waterproof goretex and weigh in at about 1lb IIRC. If it’s stupid hot out you can just sleep in the cover.

All kinds of conditions but I'm from WNY near Buffalo so If it works in our area should work in most. I want it mostly for hunting during the mid to late fall and early winter but someday want to go out west and hunt camp too.

I have considered the bivy shelter arrangement too but I just picked up a nice tent and so I figured the bivy bag cover and the tent would cover most scenarios for me. I also have a truck cap and would sleep in that as well but want options for outside too.

Ah yeah, sack is perfect then. Well, my recommendation stands.

You didn’t by any chance buy that tent that @longbowwoman was selling did you?

I have both a bivy and a tent.
The bivy is all you need but a tent can keep creepy little guests from joining you. Haha

My wife accompanied me many times and even hunted 20 years ago.
About 4 or 5 years ago she didn't want me to go elk hunting alone.
The nights were very cold. She is now ok with me going solo or otherwise.
She is getting wise in her old age!

Sportsman guide would be be a good place to look for a Bivy bag . Also look at the hammock and tarp combinations , very comfortable and can go to the ground if you need to. Check out hammock forums for some ideas. Good luck

I was going to check on it.
I will when I get home.
Pretty sure its military surplus.

I got it at the big shop in Ft. Collins sevedal years ago. Very durable and increases warmth.

I made one and an ultralight tarp that can ridgeline between trees or use hiking poles on the ends. All coated fabric. Stuffs into a silpoly bag the size of a 40oz yeti with all the guy lines and stakes.
