Broadheads for faster bows

Looking back I should’ve went with something similar to your arrow weight. I was so dead set on speed because of what happened to me last season. I’ve had a similar situation with a slick trick. It was one of their smaller heads, and it took a doe forever to die. One of the reasons I switched to the ramcats years back was to get a bigger hole.

Still plenty of time before season. I went with the Victory RIP TKO 300s with 75gr outsert and 125gr heads.

Tooth of the arrow, slick tricks muzzy torcar, are all good fixed options, if your wanting mechanical the grim reapers are great and so are the rage trypan. My setup 2 years ago was 70 pounds 30 inch draw shooting 300 spine victory xv using the trypans shooting at 345 I blew through several hogs and deer and one boar hog that went over 300

I’m shooting the 300 victory xv’s this year myself. I know they’re going to be brittle, but they are fast which is what I was going for.

Just for another point of reference. I shoot 28", 60#, 400 grain total arrow weight @ 290 FPS with about 12% FOC . Shoot 100g Montecs on 28" Easton Axis helical fletched with 3 Blazers. Out to 60 yards they fly as good as I can shoot them. Have no problem with penetration.

A bow shooting 250fps+ will generally hit +-3” inside of 30 yards, with a single pin set somewhere between 25-28 yards.

there’s no such thing as no mans land.

Ok well if there’s no such thing as no mans land it proves that the RF theory is a bunch of BS. Hit the buck just below the spine in line with the shoulder. Got minimal penetration, let the deer lay over night after watching the footage, then went in with a dog the next morning. Found small amounts of blood for about a mile and a half. And btw I hunt in Louisiana where the deer are smaller and still didn’t get a pass through.

Where do you hunt in Louisiana

Area 2 and area 4. I’ve shot some bigger body deer in area 4 but where I hunt in area 2 the body’s are small. I’ve killed quite a few bucks over 120” that weighed less than 150lbs. Biggest in area 2 was a buck I killed in 09 that scored 169” but only weighed 140lbs. Total opposite in area 4, big body’s, not the best of racks.

Yep about right I'm in area 3 and all we have are big rabbits but I hunt at tensas alot where I've shot 160+ pound does

Just curious, what are you running on the back? Vanes? Feathers? Strait? Offsets? Have you noc tuned the broadheads? Just curious if you had a few things to try before you start buying all different kinds of heads.

Here's what I'm thinking for this year, so take it for what it's worth. My approach is sort of similar to yours.

Last year I shot an Elite Impulse and jumped on the Ranch Fairy train with a total arrow weight of about 590gr. I switched from mechanicals to fixed blade (Slick Trick ViperTricks). The first buck I shot ran almost 150yds with VERY little bloodtrail, despite a complete pass through. It took me 2 hours of trailing, on my knees, looking for specks of blood.

This year, I switched to a faster bow (Bowtech Solution) and my finished arrow weight is 481gr. According to OT2Go, I should be in the 290fps range with my setup and still have 18% FOC. I'm also pretty sure I'm going to switch back to mechanicals (Grim Reapers). A good portion of my bowhunting is in urban areas. As such, most of my shots are under 20 yards and I need a big hole to put the deer down fast.

One add, I'm also shooting a single pin sight. I prefer the increase in speed so that I can set my sight at one yardage and be good from 0-30 yards.
I am assuming your draw length is very short or your arrows are very small spine if you’re getting 18% foc after dropping over 100 grains in the front. Is it possible it’s not the broadheads that are causing the inconsistency but perhaps your arrow is under spined for the speed you’re shooting? I ask this not knowing your draw length or draw weight.

That is so weird. I’ve shot 290# plus pound hogs and got nearly complete pass throughs with a “Ranch fairy arrow” and my 650 grain arrows only fly 239 fps. The few deer I’ve taken since making the switch to the heavy broad heads have all been straight pass throughs although here in Fl our deer are usually only about 120-130 lbs so that’s not worth bragging about. Everyone can shoot what they would like but I have yet to experience anything that would ever have me call heavy arrow high FOC “bs”...

The single most accurate fixed broadhead I’ve shot is the QAD exodus. Frankly, there isn’t a bow that I’ve owned that wouldn’t shoot it. Nor is there an animal in North America that I wouldn’t shoot it at. I too got a little too Ranch fairy influence in my set up last year. I was at 630 grains total and every deer I shot at jumped the string and moved out of the way before the arrow got to them. Too much pin gap and too slow of flight. Hoping I can settle in somewhere around 500-515 grains with a good fixed blade. That ought to handle to 160 pound bucks I’ve got around my area.

I feel your pain buddy. It’s a horrible feeling. I’m never going back to the RF crap ever again.

That is so weird.
I think this all the time reading what others are experiencing... I can only comment on what I've experienced and the point of aim, "lobbing" trajectory thing makes me think I'm crazy or something.....how can I not be experiencing the bad trajectory with a bow shooting 180fps or less....unless these guys are just slinging arrows at distances I wouldn't consider....
