Broadheads

e
Thanks for your input kbetts
My current concern I’m trying to get a feel for is the likelihood of breaking a shoulder at 40 yards with my current setup (640 , 342 IBO, . 29” DL) Perhaps some people have tried it with this larger cutting diameter head and can share their experiences . The last thing I want to do is “bonk” a shoulder at 40-45 yards .

You’ll break all the shoulders you want, no problem. My slight hesitation with wide two blades came from a deer shot with a compound and a Simmons. I shot her high and she fell in a pile but wasn’t quite dead. I climbed down and shot a second arrow. The broadhead must’ve caught on the wide side of the edge just before the tip entered. The arrow sliced probably a foot of hide open before shooting through the woods. It’s made me think about angles ever since.

I prefer a VPA or similar. I believe there are right/left beveled three blades out there but never bothered. All of which I believe are cheaper than Silver Flames.

I do not like shooting 3 blades from a low poundage bow. The last deer I shot with a 3 blade hit right in the scapula from about 9 yards off the ground with a compound. I got 2" of penetration (that's what he said?). With a stick and string, I am not shooting anything but a 2 blade, cut on contact head. In heavy bone, like the humerus or ridge of the scapula, a 3 blade acts like a punch where a 2 blade will wedge or in the case of a single bevel split the bone. That's better in my opinion.

I like the Cutthroats that I killed 3 deer with last year. I also plan to try some grizzlies and maybe even Abowyer heads next season.

Did that head have a tanto tip? Tanto style have shown the least tendency to skip or deflect on bone.

Any advice on dialing in a stock insert Axis Traditional and when to get broadheads ..
400 spine at 30"
If I shoot a "heavy" field tip kit and i get 175s (for example) shooting well- is that good enough?
Still taking my time enjoying working on form and consitency out to 10yds.
Im fortunate to have a buddy locally that will help me with tuning and i'll probably get a set of arrows with inserts and broadheads only when im accurate & CONSISTENT .

Thanks

As for the is that good enough question, the broad stroke general answer for me would be yes. It sounds like you are just getting started and I agree with the process you seem to be following to get it close while you develop your form and accuracy. Developing good form and a clean shot process is what builds accuracy. In your case, I wouldnt even find it necessary to be shooting at a dot. Blank bale is fine and focus on form and groups. Be sure and make notes of the arrow you are shooting if it is shooting well such as spine, length, total weight and point weight. That will give you a lot of guidance for setting up your long term arrows when you are ready to build them out.

I am still sticking with the last few 100gr 3 blade rage broadheads I have,....Dang shame they discontinued them. I have a bunch of old ones that I have rebuilt. I know some folks don't like expandables, but I have a long track record with them and really believe in them!
Take a look at the three blade Grim Reapers. “Watch’em Drop” ain’t no BS. Lots of models, weights, configurations.

I just can't help it. I'm SOOOO sorry @Allegheny Tom. I know this is against all Trad Values......Check this out and don't shoot the messenger! :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy: Jump to 2:45 in video......again, don't shoot the messenger!!!!
For What It's Worth...I'll be shooting single bevel Cutthroat 150's this year!

Got away with it that time. If I was going to try a mechanical with a trad setup it would probably be with a deadmeat head. But there is no chance I am trying that.

Yeah, it cut a large entrance hole but did he get an exit hole?
How much penetration did he actually get?
Did he penetrate heavy bone?
It seems to me that he is shooting the worst of all arrow combinations. Expandable head on light arrows, low foc, out of a trad bow. I highly doubt that arrow combination, out of that bow, would penetrate heavy bone.
I will still put my faith in the experience and advice of Ashby. He's already proven which arrow combination will be consistently the most effective.
