Canoe rebuild

I just found this thread and thought I’d share my diy outriggers. I used it duck hunting for several seasons. I eventually replaced the main pvc crossmember with emt conduit because of cold weather cracking. The pvc down parts held up fine. The pool noodles were held in place by really big cable ties.

This off season I will be working on the canoe. Trolling motor, lights, push pole, more comfortable seats...I haven't had a use for outriggers as of yet. Boats pretty wide and stable.....the noodles look like missile launchers, I like it

I used it on big water so the outriggers were kind of an insurance plan. I could carry four dozen decoys, two people, gear and a dog. I had a 17ft Osage. I put on a 35# thrust minn Kota that I paid $10 for on CL. The guy was selling it for parts. I put $30 more in it and I’m still using it. Oh yes, I packed a deep cycle battery too.

What kind of range do u get from the troller/battery when loaded down with hunt stuff?..I got a 50pd thrust minn kota for free because it has a broke tilt bracket. The sticker says 10hr on low and 1.5hr on high... Does that seem about right?

That sounds about right. I have it on a 1470 landau Jon boat now. The Jon with a 25horse four stroke is way heavier than the canoe and I can run it for several hours while fishing. I never just use high so a charge will let me fish all day and then some. My bracket was broken too that’s why it was for parts. Sounds like your deal was better!

Your motor will pull more amps than mine but like I say you won’t be running on high all the time. I bought the largest amp hour battery I felt comfortable carrying with the largest amp hour rating. It weighed about 60 pounds. If I remember correctly my 35# thrust only pulled one amp or so on low. I’ve since switched to a lower amp hour battery that weighs about 45lbs. As you well know weight is crucial in canoe load out. Besides, an extra 15lbs let me carry extra decoys!

I have a 14ft old town guide that I prefer to paddle. It’s way lighter so padding is nice. I saw that @Nutterbuster was talking about a beaver tail paddle. I hadn’t heard of one so I looked it up. I may have to invest in one. 0F9FFA0F-0496-46DC-85B1-479B67FA6156.jpeg

So I remembered this thread and saved it a while back. I figured instead of starting a new one this hits home perfectly. I got an old 12 footer least year and finally got it in the water. Well, she needs a little
work. But for $200 even after the cost to repair it will be well worth it. I actually really like the way it handled when I had it out. But just that trip and back home exposed that I need to get it fixed up before further use.

Seems the orbital sander is the way to go on YouTube. I’m going to start sanding today and not get too crazy and see how the bad spots look. I’m mostly concerned with the one side because there are two cracks only about 6”to 8” apart. And the one is a good 8” long stress crack. The other is about 4” or 5”. Any advice is appreciated. What specific patches or material, epoxy, etc ?

I went a little extreme but I had more damage than that. If the fiberglass was squishy I cut it out. Can't help with small repair cause I got not experience with that. ...... I think u can cut it in half and fix with flex tape

Looking for something like that (12') and have had no luck so far. Congrats on the find!!

There’s an old town 119 for $400 here in PA. I can grab it if you’re serious about it. Now sure how far away you are

Weldabeast. You’re the reason I’m going through with this. And it seems vtbow is the bonafide expert. And as you said I’m finding any soft spots. And I may end up sanding the whole thing for repaint.

Also going to add Kevlar reinforcements for the stern and bow and bottom ridges
