Can't trust coyotes

This year I froze all the byproducts from butchering deer. I had planned to do some experiments this winter with drop sites for bones and meat scraps them in the woods near my house.

The coyotes are pretty bad by me, but as typical they run in yearly cycles and weekly circuits. I've had multiple encounters screwed up by coyotes AND bears. In 2019 I had coyotes chase a doe within seconds of a vital hit, and they were on her and had ruined a bunch of meat in the 20 minutes it took to get down/situated and track/find her... I also had a 185lb-ish "dressed" buck eaten down to where I could pick the whole carcass remainder with one hand. I don't wait overnight anymore, I'll go back out at 1 or 2am if that's the amount of time I think I should wait... The 2019 buck I completely lost blood, didn't come up with anything on a grid search, and had to wait for a dog tracker the next morning.

I think thats a recommendation that needs to change in most of the east that has coyotes if you're concerned about the meat. Rarely these days does the next morning thing end without coyotes beating hunters to the meat. 10 years ago it was still somewhat safe to leave a deer overnight, today not so much.
Yep!

I love them mangy dogs!!!! Love shooting them any chance I get. I shot a doe a few years ago at last light during early archery and I don’t think it was even a half hour. I saw the doe go down but once down couldn’t see her. Probably 35-40 yards away at the most in thick cover. I get down and gather up my gear and head over to her….. she was already chewed on!! At the point of where the back ribs meet the torso about a 3-4” diameter circle chewed out that quickly. Talk about the hackles coming up on the back of your neck!!! Didn’t see them or hear them at all!!!

Yep. I shot a buck in November, he took three steps and dropped dead. I’ve got two tags so I stayed put hoping he was at the beginning of a buck parade whose caboose would be a giant id been keeping track of. Within a minute a coyote came along! I slung an arrow at him, but he was in dense brush. A minute later another came and winded me before I could send one his way.
Before next season I’m buying a frame pack so that I can haul deer long distance. I’m also getting or making a hoist so that when I need ri leave a deer and go for help I can hang the deer out of reach.
