CLASSIFIED SCAMMERS

he emailed me a picture of an item I was hunting but with an old date. I requested a new picture with an updated photo. no response.

Using Google lens image search in this case is helpful. It may be someone else's picture all together. Thats apparently a popular tactic as well.

Who looks into such members? This is a fairly small and mostly trustworthy community from my experience. Too bad the vermin cannot stay out.

There's several checks they have to go through to get in legitimately. @redsquirrel weeds most of them out at the beginning and @boyne bowhunter keeps an eye out for any who sneak in and catches the majority of the rest. The two of them catch and kick out a ton of scammers that you guys never see. It's kind of disheartening when you realize how many are out there trying to get in everyday.

Unfortunately it is somewhat hard to separate the legitimate new members from those who are intent on trying to scam people from their initial sign on information. As a moderation group we do our best to weed them out (and we do reject a lot) but we also rely on the help of the community to catch those that manage to squeak through. So, to answer you question @Alaska at Heart, it takes the help of the community to fully identify and catch these guys so we can get them removed.

Thank you all for your reports, they are by far the best confirmation that we have a bad apple amongst us. Keep up the vigilance!

EDIT: You beat me to it @GCTerpfan! :tearsofjoy:

Somewhat hard?

It's probably next to impossible and that isn't your fault. Your requirements for entry are designed to be INCLUSIVE, because this is a community afterall -- first and foremost.

Secondarily, it is a trading spot. It would be pretty difficult, if not impossible, to spot a scammer at conception unless they used a bot to create the account.

You guys are doing great! Thank you for keeping the trash out of this community.

You might actually be surprised how many I catch before they even join. Then @boyne bowhunter is like a hound dog and catches scent of the majority of them before they even try to get to work. Unfortunately a few sneak through but all of you guys are so great at picking them out and notifying us. Considering the amount of people we have here we are pretty lucky with how few times they have actually been successful.

It is really good to know that you have a vetting process in place to actually screen folks before allowing membership to the site. I think AT allows just about anyone and then it takes a pretty overt act for them to get pinched. This is a unique community and is appreciated. Thanks!

Appreciate the warning. It’s a shame they’re targeting the WTB section, but it’s a classic move. Always check the join date and post count before replying to a PM. Thanks for keeping the community clean

The scammers have gotten out of control over on AT. I get random texts and emails straight to my private info anytime I even comment on a marketplace post. I'm done selling over there and probably buying as well.

All these websites should start requiring two step identification for sellers accounts. Nothing’s 100% but at least you know who you’re dealing with.
