Cold weather hunts

The only thing that will ruin my hunt is cold feet! I have a pair of Woogie Mucklucs that I can use in the tree but I don't think I could walk or climb with them they are sooo big from insulation. I've had them a couple of years now but haven't tried them out yet.......

My Steger Mukluks are incredible, but the aluminum platform just sucked the heat out of them. I’m going to be first in line for a Tethrd Vader when it comes out.

A couple years ago I hunted several days that hovered around zero. I curled up in thick cover on a Sheepskin and relocated every few hours. Over the years I’ve gathered that in my hunting areas, deer don’t move much in that kinda cold. They bed in the food / fast until there’s a warm up.

That's awesome advise. I will have to try that instead of suffering with cold feet. Thanks

I love First Lite stuff...it'$ pricey, I know, but I use the Solitudes for cold weather down to about 20 deg, and the Sanctuaries for cold below that temperature. I've been ok down to -25 or so (wind chill) with those. I usually put the bottoms on before I leave for the hike in, but I'm in PA, & my longest hikes are 1-3 miles, & usually are ALOT shorter than that.

Sometimes I wait until I get to the tree. But if I have a long hike in, I just stuff 'em in a dry bag & use the bottom "bedroll" straps on my pack to hold it- the dry bag keeps 'em dry, but more important, I usually hunt in really thick stuff which, in PA, means PLENTY of thorns & stickers, so they are protected & don't get caught up/torn up on the way in. Thorns just slide off of dry bags.

My bottoms ALWAYS go on when I'm on the ground. I practiced trying to put them on with a platform set about a foot of off the ground & my saddle on, and it wasn't pretty- I'm just too clumsy & off balance for that!

The nice thing about them is they have what I call "double zippers" in the legs-you have a zipper that goes down your leg, to close it up once you put your foot thru it, and then you have another one on the same track that you can open, so you can "vent" as much of your legs as you want to on the hike in & during the climb. Once I cool down a bit, I just stand up, zip the legs full closed, put the jacket on, and stay warm!

My wife gave me the go ahead to buy some warm clothing and I have been looking at the solitude or sanctuary, I wear furnace base layers and origin hoody and catalyst soft shell pants down to the mid to low 30s fine and if its breezy just rain gear on top and bottom over it and I'm good. If I layer the same way just adding on over top how cold would the solitude set get me?

Tough question to answer...lots of variables, but the Solitudes should be able to take you down to single digit temperatures, especially if you get the bibs also. They're rated for 20-45 degrees, but for me, all First Lite stuff has kept me warm in temps lower than their rating-your mileage may vary. One recommendation I would have is also get a pair of their Obsidian Merino pants to wear under the Solitude bibs.
