Compound barebow

Got a “new to me” bow this year. Mathews No Cam HTR. Feeling pretty dialed in. I kind of go back and forth between my recurve and compounds. Some differences in the way you shoot the two bows instinctively but the feeling of the arrow flying and hitting where you’re looking is equally satisfying for me.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything about shooting compounds this way. If anybody has ever had any interest in trying or curious about shooting this way after watching a Tim Wells video or something, I’m happy to answer questions. Some people have concerns about derailing their bow. I’ve put a fair amount of torque on the string with some bows before and haven’t seen anything that would concern me. I guess it’s possible.

what rest are you planning/have on it? Do you cant? Gloves or tab?

The easiest thing would be to slap a whisker biscuit but I dont know. I want to try feathers so thinking just building up the shelf and an elevated rest.

I Shoot 2" Feathers Out of my Compound with No Issues At All. Some Claim They Are Noisy But I've Never Noticed a Critter Caring!

Keep Us Updated.I'm Very Interested. Would Like To Loose The Sights and Release! Many YT Vids Show it Working Well. I Only Shoot 25 Yds Anyway.

thats how i hunted before going all trad,( 2010 ) gloved on a springy or flipper, compounds were only 50 percent letoff back then, if that.

My early bowhunting days, 1974 to 1991, were all using a compound and instinctive shooting with no sights or release and a glue on rubber rest. I used a three finger glove and shot split finger in those days. To be perfectly honest I was a better archer in those days than I am now. I shot dozens of arrows per day to stay sharp at all distances and all that practice is something I just don't do anymore. I just don't feel the need now that I rely on a sight and mechanical release. Besides, I have no idea how I would fit that kind of time into my schedule anymore. Funny how the days seem to get shorter the older you get.

I use a biscuit with the top cut off. You can really use any kind of rest you want. I didn’t like a flipper rest because I always had trouble with fletching clearance if I didn’t have a clean release. Had a QAD Ultrarest on this bow when I bought it but it kind of got in the way of my sight picture.

Glove or tab is fine. I use a tab but glove works fine. I trim the index finger down so I can feel the tip of my finger on my face for anchoring. I anchor with the tip of my index finger next to my nostril and first knuckle on the side of my cheek bone. For bowfishing I shoot with bare fingers. Can shoot that way all the time but figure if I’m shooting a lot it might make my fingers sore.

I usually have a slight cant. Just kind of let the bow settle how it naturally wants to sit against my hand without turning my wrist to influence it. I can cant the bow if I need to shoot under/around something.

I started out shooting this way when I was a kid. I got my first bow when I was 9 years old. It was 1990 and I came up with my Dad and his buddy watching a lot of Fitzgerald, Barry Wensel and Alan Altizer. Fitzgerald always shot that way and so my Dad was doing it and I did whatever he told me lol.

HTR was one of the most favorite bows I ever owned. So smooth and easy to shoot. Congrats.
