Converting from RH to LH?

So in your opinion...starting with a person right handed and left eye dominant with no archery experience would you start out with a lefty.

Hands down go left. I wish the bow shop I bought my first bow from would of checked dominance first. Would of given me 15 years of way more accurate shooting. The clear vision with both eyes open alone has given me a lot more confidence this last few years.

I switched about 35 years ago. Target panic was setting in shooting right handed so I switched to left. Only thing I hate about it is not being able to shoot with both eyes open. Other then that it was really easy to make the switch.

I've got a buddy that is right handed in everything he does except hes also left eye dominant. He took up bow hunting in his late 20s and started off left handed. The pro shop he went to noticed it right away and convinced him it was in his best interest. 10,000+ arrows and hes still a lefty and never plans to switch.

This is identical to my story. Decided to get into bow hunting so I grabbed my dads bow (left handed) that hadn’t been used in 20 years, restrung it and started shooting. I already made the transition to shooting guns left handed so I was convinced left handed for the bow was best. I still shoot a handgun right handed though. Maybe I should try transitioning that as well.

Off topic but i remember reading a story in a book of hunting short stories where a guy started out shooting ambidextrously and on his first time out he had a shooter in front of him, got buck fever, and couldnt remember which hand to let go of. I speciffically remember the part about "if i let go with the right hand i would kill the deer but if i let go with the wrong hand the bow will smash me in the face and break my nose." It doesnt sound like anyone here is having that problem but i always liked that story.

No, I am right handed in all other aspects. I wanted to switch because I am left eye dominant.
I asked because I am very mixed up when it comes to using my RH and LH. I use my RH for gross motor skills and my LH for fine motors. I shoot my guns LH and bow RH. I have thought about trying a LH bow but I am afraid that I won't be able to pull it back with my LH. Anyone have a struggle pulling bow back when switching to other hand?

I had no problem pulling back. I did turn the LH down four turns from bottom (70#) just to make it a little easier to get used to it. I think a persons strength is generally pretty balanced.

I shot 70# RH and shoot 63# left but most of that is me finally realizing that I don’t need 70# to kill a deer especially with these faster bows.

I would think that as comfortable as you are with both hands and the fact that you shoot guns lefty, you might do better lefty if thats your dominant eye.

The hardest part of switching from one hand to the other is grabbing the bow and arrow to start shooting. Because it has become a habit. But the switch to your dominant eye is well worth it and soon the new way will become the habit. I shot for 17 years left handed (since I was left handed) until that dominant eye thing was brought to my attention. I always shot fairly well, but better once I switched. And it was a real benefit for me, going from left to right, right handed equipment is easier to come by.

Left hand day 3 and first Robin Hood. I think I’m comfortable saying the groups are tighter so no need to keep measuring that!

Not bad for 3 days at all!

So I assume there will be a nice RH bow showing up in classifieds later.

I had to stop shooting same spot when I switched to save my arrows. Happened a lot more LH.
