I know some folks have been cutting there sticks 20 or 22 inches from top. But I went the opposite direction for a 24 inch stick and 21 inch between steps. It's real easy.

Cut 24 inches from the bottom. You will need to drill 5 holes. Two step holes with a 1/4 inch bit. A stand off hole with a 1/4 bit. A versa button hole (I chose to use a 1/4 versa button). A bumper hole with a 5/32 bit (then I threaded with 10-24 bit). The trick here for the top bumper is to use a spacer to fill that 5/16 hole from the original versa button. I used an aluminum spacer with 5/16 OD, 0.192 ID, 7/8 length. I know I'm not explaining it in detail. But it should be enough to get ya'll started.

I took ideas from @DaveT1963 and @g2outdoors.

So you have 23” from step to step?

The only thing I would consider changing is just moving the versa down an inch or so. That way it's in between the slotted holes and away from where the middle steps use to be.
