Darwin Award tree stands

I have a scar on my right butt cheek from a nail head I nailed in crooked on a “deer stand” I built circa 199X. I was sliding down off of it and got hung on it and gravity was winning so I just rode it down.

I would put an eye patch on the other cheek and go as a pirate next Halloween.

Here's one that was probably serviceable 15 years ago. That rotted out plywood brings back some memories, doesn't it?

Hunted out of treestands when ever possible never lower than 14 screw in steps high or at least 22' to my stand platform
Never used any FAS for the first 12-15 seasons
Never had so much as a close call UNTIL.......
I was set up in an absolutely huge multi trunked shag bark hickory stand was best guess 25' off the ground to platform
Was coming up for an evening sit was about 7' below my stand and while using a limb to stand on heard the dreaded magnitude 10x sphincter puckering heart stopping Crack and thank God I leapt as the branch failed and slammed into a near by trunk as I bear hugged it with all my terror induced adrenaline driven strength
Then I slid and climbed my way down to the ground

Once on the ground I took stock of the totality of what just happened or more correctly what MIGHT have happened
>I was single no girlfriend at the time and absolutely NOBODY knew where I was hunting
>Absolutely NOBODY would've ever known I failed to return to my motel for at least 2-3 days
>My family was use to me not checking in for 2-3 days at a time
>If I would've fallen I would have struck multi very large limbs prior to impacting the ground sustaining multiple broken limbs, ribs and severe head injuries
>It was a record cold November for that area with the last 10 days having a been below freezing more hours than not causing the ground to freeze and become rock hard making impacting it from a fall essentially a WCS event
>Was long before cell phones so I had zero chance to summon help
>I was over a mile in any direction from a home or help to crawl to if I could've even been able to crawl
>The low that night was in the high 20's and I had no means to start a fire with
>I was parked on a dead end private road so none of the many people I knew there would've ever likely spotted my truck after a while and figured out something might be wrong
In short my chances of surviving that fall were best guess less than 5%
From that day forward I never again hunted without a FAS of some sort along with a Linemans belt
Few years ago went to a RCH
Bottom line is either uses a FBH/FAS or expect to end your days in a wheel chair wearing adult diapers

Haha, there was a time when I would have contemplated whether that thing was still usable!
A lot these photos bring back memories don't they? :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:

Not all of them good but since I've somehow managed to walk away every time they make for good stories, lessons learned and bring a smile to my face now. If it weren't for having a guardian angel following me around in my youth I might not be smiling about the memories now.

Found this one last weekend turkey hunting. Nothing too much wrong with the setup . . . . except for the fact that it was in a dead pine tree. o_O The break was relatively fresh so I'm assuming it went over this winter. If you look at the close up you'll see the tree stand pinched between the tree and the ground. That would have been a "not fun" ride if someone had been in the stand when it went over.

Evidence that hang on stands and ladders cause more damage to trees than climbing spurs....

There's a reason they're called "hang-on" stands...

...You climb up and when you step over onto the platform wondering if it's going to hold or not, you think to yourself, "Hang on, here we go..."
