Discrepancies between huntstand "property info" and " hunting land " layers

Hey, attached is a screenshot of an area where I captured shapes from the "property info" layer on huntstand. I have the map set to "hunting land" to confirm I captured the right parcels. As you can see the yellow outline indicated by the "hunting land" layer is way off of the red outline I captured from the "property info" layer. Being that the red line lines up with the edge of the field, I am inclined to trust it over the yellow line, but do any of yall have experience with this kind of disagreement? Is there a definitive source I can go to in such cases? The area in question is an enormous national forest that is mostly open for hunting, with some privately held areas scattered through, it is not well signed as it has hundreds of miles of border. I have Huntstand as well but I am not sure which section I would trust. Your best bet is to find someone with Onx and see what theirs shows for the same spot. Both apps are occasionally wrong as the local info they are based off are occasionally wrong. Sorry I couldn't help more. Best of luck!

It’s tough to say. You might try contacting the office over that district for some clarity. What’s weird I’d the property in the Lowe corner appears to line up. Usually when one spot is off most of the General area is off the same amount. At that point I use my best judgement to line things back up.

Different question - is there any way to hide the red parcel boundaries once you ID a parcel?

I can make the parcel boundaries any color or no color, but this property is very irregular in shape and if I dont put an outline i have a hard time remembering whats in and whats out when I switch to satellite or topo.

I just remembered that SC has a public land map on their SC DNR website. I would check that.
Yeah I have used that site, ill see which layer it agrees with.

The SCDNR site lines up more with the "hunting land" layer

We rely way too much on Google satellite images. And unfortunately Huntstand, OnX and a lot of other imagery apps depend on the Almighty G for their info. I use Huntstand and havent had this issue....yet. Thanks for sharing, good info for us all to stay sharp.

I use HuntStand mainly but have OnX as well for a back up. Huntstand in my opinion has better features but each app has their place. As @BOWHUNTER14 said, always reference against something if you are unsure. Always better to have a back up to be better safe than sorry!

I would trust the property info over the hunting layer. The property info comes from the county where as the hunting map comes from google. Usually the county is more up to date and detailed but like others said I'd cross reference it with a reliable source. My county has a GIS website that shows exact boundaries and all the owner info down to the property value and how many buildings are on the property. Each county is a little different but they should all have the same basic info

Like others have said, I would compare it to other available sources but, the most important thing to remember is that the "survey is on the ground" as the first surveyor I worked under used to say. Which means its the monuments on the ground that control where the property line is. Being public land, I am guessing that the property line is clearly marked in the field. Just make sure you heed that information over whatever your App of choice says. Here is a post I made a couple years ago when some OnX reps were giving some REALLY BAD information on a podcast. https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/mapping-with-property-lines.4077/

My brutha

I heard the same comment on a MeatEater podcast and had the same reaction as you. In fact, there’s another thread on here where we went over this again.

I am also a Land Surveyor with multi state experience so trust us on this, lol.

Seriously though, there’s several things coming into play here that most folks can’t be expected to know about. Always, always, always tread carefully near the called for property lines when using any of the apps that show ownership. Use all the information available to you, but know that if you’re wrong you may well be facing the consequences.

In the aerial posted above notice the four arrows I drew. Notice how they point to four corners of a block of timber that looks IDENTICAL to the parcel drawn near it.....is it the projection of the property line layer that’s off? Is it the mosaic’d flat picture of a round earth that’s off? Is the inherent error in your GPS signal that’s off?

It’s a combination of all of them.
