Anyone have suggestions for modifying an old military surplus, large size ALICE Pack. This is my first fall saddle hunting and need to figure out how to carry 3 HH climbing sticks and my compound bow along with the rest of my "stuff". I have a used ALICE Pack and could use advice or any of your experiences. Getting something else is NOT an option this year.

does it have a molle system or some attach points? Need to see a picture to really answer how I would attach.

If I were using it I would use either some Nite Ize gear ties, Bungee cords or some adustable webbing to act like a compression strap/lashing.

utilize any spots with molle attachments to strap on gear.

I would do this above as well. If you're good with knots, you get some zing it or Paracord and tie it on.

I did the full Alice mod a while back, turning it into a hybrid - "Hellcat" I think it was called. Basically you use an Alice pack with the standard external frame and replace the waist belt and shoulder straps with MOLLE gear. I don't recommend it. It was kind of fun to do but, by the time I was finished, I had spent enough to justify a much better pack. It works OK but it's a still a pretty heavy pack compared to modern systems.

I agree with the above, used some bungee cord to make do this season but don't invest in a complete modification.

Good advice - thanks. I'll give a bungee and/or some para-cord a try and see how it works out. Really anxious to hang this fall - but to describe what I'll be doing as "run-n-gun" is not accurate. I'm very fit and athletic but 67 years long in the tooth. A better description might be be "shuffle - climb - and nap". I've always loved being up in a tree, but climbers (even the ultra-lite ones) felt heavy and cumbersome. I hunt 3/4 - 1 1/2 miles into private & public land in northern MN and I think the saddle will work out really well for what I want to do. Cheers & good luck this fall!

Buy some ALICE cargo straps. They cam over and will bind ladders, sticks, stands, etc., like a champ. Once you try them you will see, inexpensive too.
