DIY Climbing Stick (1.5lb)

1lb 15 ounces is so freaking light. I love it and I want them haha. The angled aluminum is probably a little lighter than the fixed steps that everyone else has been using for their diy sticks don’t you think?
The double steps my buddy makes are 3.5oz - probably lighter than the angled steps.

Had a student at a local tech school weld them up. Paid him $150 for materials, cutting and welding. It was kind of a lot but I might get to hunt on his dad’s property.

These angle iron steps are really nice to stand on. Really nice. Very comfortable. Could almost use the top stick as a platform.

-6061 T6 1" square tube, .065" wall
-2 Double steps made from machined 6061 t6 aluminum (10"×1.5"x.375" stock)
-2 Grade 8 Hex bolts (1.75", 1/4-20)
-1 1.625" Allen screw, 1/4-20.
-1 Fender washer (1/4" ID, 1.25" OD)
-1 Chrome Steel spacer (1/4" ID, 3/8" length)
-3 1/4-20 thin hex nuts with nylon insert
-1 1/4" ID x 1/2" OD x 1" long nylon spacer (for the bottom bolt for the aider)

That doesn't include the reinforcement pieces that I put in the first stick.

FYI, I tried a stick without all the internal reinforcement, just the 6061 aluminum 1/16" tubing. Initial trials felt pretty solid. This saves some weight but more importantly makes manufacturing on my end much easier. I'll keep on eye on it, and if I see deformation, I can always add the reinforcement later. Here are some pics with a standard 2 step alternating aider. The top of the stick, after doing the "Flinging flip" is 8 feet for me. So I'll be able to climb to 24 feet, with 6 pounds of sticks (3 sticks) in probably 3-4 minutes.

Hey Garrett,

Did you end up seeing any type of deformation on the 1/16 aluminum tubing and have to add reinforcement like you spoke about above?

I did this with my 1/16” tubes. Small aluminum unthreaded spacer 7/8” long.
I have not beat them up much. Just a couple jumps.

ON 24"sticks where are you guys positioning the versa button from the top? AKA, how far down the stick?

Cool stuff. Thanks for sharing. My first off season project is modifying my API's with 1/16 tubing.
Where did you source these spacers?

What do you guys think the weight difference would be between 1/8 tubing with the drilled holes like the hunting beast sticks and 1/16 tubing that’s reinforced? Can’t be too much.

Perfect timing on your question Backstrap.
Heres a beast stick stealth stripped, 1/16 aluminum with a stealth strip and the paper backing

The hunting beast 1” tubing is 13.1 ounces, the 1/16” tubing is 9.4? Are they the same length?

Its a cam cleat, similar to the Muddy Pros.
Yes on the weight I had a 24" pc kicking around....And it's 9.4 minus .1 if you want to be exact 9.3 ;)
