I just did one and I’m super happy with it. Have a few more things to finish and add before it’s done done but as soon as it is I’ll post it up. I did the bafang kit

I have a 42t chain ring and I may drop down even smaller like you suggested. So far it’s been good. The design of my bike wouldn’t allow for a tube mount battery but I don’t mind the rear one. I have some more work to do to it to finish it up. Need to finish zip tying and tidying up the wires, need to add a couple more accessories and then I’ll post more pics and maybe make a video. I took it out last night to check cameras and it was a game changer for time savings haha.

I would love to build a bike like one of these, any updates from the OP?

What do you guys think about fat tire vs mtb? All I see is marketing saying fat tire is the way to go for hunting…mud, snow, all terrain…. seems like mountain bikes sure go a lot of places with standard tires too though. Thoughts from the riders here?

I’m in the same decision making matrix. I already have a decent regular MTB with 2.95 tires and it seems to go most places for me as long as I can peddle. I’ve not really put it under much load though with hunting gear. It appears if you’re going to go fat tire the best route is electric hub drive fat tire. If you’re not going to go with a motor it may be best to stay with your MTB. Also, some places do not allow any motors electric or otherwise so you must use shoe leather or a standard MTB.

Same boat here and have ghosted this thread since it came out. Where it seems most disagree is the mid drive vs hub (motor) which also increases cost and effort. This is why I’ve dragged my feet. My
Mid drive conversion kit will cost as much as a cheap hub drive fat tire.

Had a close call riding through NY mud last year under peddle power…. And can’t imagine riding it through the Midwest hills and washouts I’ve hunted…. So I’ve remained timid on the purchase of conversion or yet another (cheap e fat tire)(as I already have a kick A trek and this peddle powered hunting mongoose)

For me, it all depends on terrain that you hunt on which type of bike to choose. I hunt north east Texas, south west Arkansas, and the ouachita national forest mountains in Arkansas.

I technically have almost a “plus” sized bike with a tire width of 2.35 I believe. Not super skinny and not too fat. With my hub driven motor, I go up and down anything. Literally, I can pedal assist up a steep mountain. I also hunt in the bottoms on Arkansas and around a lake in Texas, and mud can be a factor.
For the most part, with a decent bike, it doesn’t make much difference for me. I am also 190 lbs minus any hunting gear. Probably at 230 or so with full gear and bow.
I will say I have hardly any experience with snow. If we get snow, it is like an inch and is gone the next day. A fat tire bike may make a difference in deep snow drift.
I really don’t think you can go wrong with a regular mtb or a fat tire. Both will get the job done.

My buddy has a fat tire and is super comfortable to ride compared to mine, but mine is able to output more power. There are multiple different angles that you can go with it. It depends on your hunt style, desire for output/comfort, and the terrain you hunt.
Hope that helps a bit!
