DIY lineman's belt and tether vs Tethrd

As others have said doublesteps sells spliced predator ropes, and wild edge sells spliced oplux if you want something a bit smaller diameter.
Knotted oplux, htp, other 8-9mm ropes are also a lot more compact than tethrd ropes.

The value is fine, but for my preferences you'd need to pay me to use those big heavy things.
Big, agreed. Heavy? Nah. My dump pouch feels the same with and without. But they’re definitely NOT “no-bulk”, on that we’re in accordance.

Your dump pouch feels the same with/without an extra pound (weight of tethrd tether as delivered to me, including biner.) in it? Or ~2 pounds between both ropes.

No, seriously feels the same without the one factory-setup rope. What’s a pound worth? JMHO.

Just another pound doesn't really matter, until it does. I'd rather save that pound (at a lower cost), and put some of the savings (in weight, bulk, and $$) toward a ring of squirrelsteps, and carry platform and 2 ropes in the approximate space and a few ounces weight of the tethrd ropes.

The amount of weight I want hangin' from my saddle is finite. Extra weight/bulk doesn't really matter unless you are walking a ton, or you get pushed up into the next-larger/bulkier sort of hauling arrangement/backpack/etc.

So it doesn't matter, until you add up a handful of things that don't matter.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but curious if you purchased a fid and proper tools like the YT videos use or if you rigged something up.

Thanks.
I use knitting needles cut and used as fids and wire. With the wire I pull instead of pushing like wit the fid.

Decent rope, good strength and a tight sheath on it at a good price

I was not a fan of tethrd ropes, I'm not sure if they changed it but the rope I had was very soft and I actually had issues with it snagging on rough bark and had some spots where loops pulled out.. I learned to splice predator rope and couldn't be happier with that decision.

Oplux is not spliceable. Wild Edge sells sewn Oplux

one thing I have noticed with any sewn eye that has the covering over the sewn slice, is that if wet, they can squeak depending on what they are touching. I had the predator sewn eye on the bridge on a flex. I took a swamp bath on the way in, once I got in the tree, every move I made squeaked.

As for the looser covering on some of the tethers, they are easy to splice, but will snag. Predator rope is nice. difficult to splice until you have done a few and learned how to do it. I tried a couple different ropes before I tried the predator, but have figured it out. a spliced eye is nice, though a lot of guys just don't want to go thru the process of doing it. Personally, I find it a relaxing/fun challenge to splice away.

I am new to saddle hunting and am beginning to put together my setup. I am contemplating making my own lineman's belt and tether, or to just buy them from Tethrd when I get my mantis. They are pretty close in price actually when all is said and done. Here is a breakdown of what I have found:

DIY: from Wesspur-Samson Predator rope $1.08/ft x 20ft=$21.60, 5 inch sewn splice $25x2=$50 so total for rope is $71.60. Plus shipping $17.70. Total $89.30
from Amazon-3 pack Black Diamond Biners $30.06
DIY Total cost Linemans belt:$64.69, Tether:$54.67. The total price for DIY build of both is $119.36.

Tethrd cost: Lineman's belt(spliced rope,2 biners, prussik)-$59.99, Tether(spliced rope,1 biner, prussik)-$54.99. free shipping with mantis. So a total price of $114.98 with additional bonus of prussik knot on each.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if it is worth it to put together my own of these, or to just buy them from Tethrd to have a completed product without the hassle. Which of these have you guys found to have better quality? Is it worth spending the extra money to DIY? Is Samson predator the better rope option, or is there something better? Are there any carabiners better than the black diamonds or Tethrd ones? Also I understand that 10 ft may be long, I will cut them down to my preferred length. I am not worried about the prussik knot for a diy rope because I will be buying ropeman 1s for each.

If you're gonna tie your own knots, then be really careful. If you tie the fisherman's knot wrong, then it will come undone. I did my own but read how to tie the knots and watched videos for a while beforehand. You might already have that expertise however. If you just go with a figure 8 that doesn't cinch down, then it is more straightforward.
