I ordered a foot of 4x3x3 1/4 inch aluminum angle yesterday. For 17 dollars I had to see if I could make it work as a diy stick top platform.

Hoping to use the 4” section to stand on but if it flexes too much I’ll flip it the other way and stand on the 3” section. I’ve seen a few other threads on this, but any input, suggestions or pictures are welcome.

Wish I had a water jet to shave a bunch of weight off! According to the website this will be 1.99 pounds.

That should work fine although it might be a little narrow. I did this with some fence post stiffener.

Here is what I'm currently using. I climb SRT so no sticks for me.

Quarter inch thick, it's 5 in x 10 in... Seems to do pretty well except for the fact that it face mounts on the post instead of having the post recess into the platform like a scout... It does get some wobble after some time on it but I have a little bit of canvas tape between the platform and post, I just have to tighten the bolts/nut occasionally16323260993872160784236304682479.jpg16323261171987469680203829771170.jpg

Originally it was 5 in by 5 in by 12 in of aluminum angle.

Love it. That’s really close to what I’m going for. I was wondering if there was any wobble. Thanks for the heads up.

Is that some sort of tape on top?

It's some camo skateboard grip tape that I got off of Amazon decently priced... I spaced the bolts out as far as I could on the side that attaches to the platform to give it a little more stability, I may even put a third bolt in there just so that it's extra tight... Haven't had any real huge issues, I check most of my equipment over once I get out of the woods so that I know I'm going into the woods with safe equipment. Sounds redundant but is absolutely necessary in some of the equipment that we use.

Have you found the 1/4 inch to be plenty strong? I was wondering if I would feel any flex

I'm probably between 180 Plus or minus 10 lb depending on what I have on my body and I can use the edge as a position to lean on, so far in about a dozen times just testing out, with no visible damage...? I wish I could put a couple of angled pieces under just for bracing, and just in case but time will tell... I stand on my step below the platform until I'm tethered in just as a safety precaution, as well as using my lineman's up to that point.

Finished product!

Looks good. You may want to round off or 45 those front corners. You could get a nice gouge or worse if you slip or get sloppy.
Good call! I’m going to do that.

I added sand to the spray paint on top. First time doing that and it worked excellent to make a very grippy surface.
