I’ve only had one boar that was tough as leather. The rest have been delicious. Similar to venison.

I've eaten pigs from 5 to 200+ pounds. Acorn fed, palmetto fed, freshwater clam fed...the works. Knock on wood, I've never had a bad one. But I've also never had a bad deer or duck or...anything really. Low standards, maybe? I dunno. I really wonder sometimes if folks won't admit to being a little skeered of wild game, and that trepidation makes them taste things that they wouldn't notice if the meat came pre cut on a little foam tray.

Chicken tastes like chicken tastes like chicken. Same is true with wild game for me. Only real difference is younger animals are less chewy.
I have found that when my buddies tell me “that hog was nasty, I didn’t even clean it”. It usually means they are too lazy to clean it. I ate my largest boar (281#). I did not save the fat from it, but I cleaned it in July in Texas..... It tasted great.

Sounds like my dad growing up. I always asked why don’t we eat the hogs and he would always respond you don’t want to fool with them nasty things, which just meant he didn’t want to fool With cleaning them! I had heard this before fishing with my grandfather. Niether my father or grandfather cared to clean animals even though they’ve both done it for years before I came along. We would just go kill hogs, gut em then take and give them to his Filipino coworkers. I wasn’t a fan of bass fishing Either for a similar reason. we never got to eat the game we worked so hard to get! Once I got to an age where I was hunting and fishing on my own whatever I caught or killed, I ate. I hope to teach my kids that same simple principal.

What is ironic though is my dad use to always say “don’t shoot him unless you plan on eating him.” Haha

Funny, I have a good buddy who told his son the same thing...... one day he returned to camp to find his son with a coyote strung up about 1/2 way through skinning it out.:)

Try this on your pork as a marinade, it's pretty awesome. Full of MSG and deliciousness.
Most Korean markets carry this brand and I've seen it in some ethnic food aisles too.

So last night I got lazy and forgot to bungee Lock my dog kennel.... well at 1am my dogs reminded me why I need to do that... love when my dogs scream big pigs in my driveway in the middle of the night waking up the whole damn neighborhood......

So if the weather is right. Looks like over Christmas we are gonna go see family in Florida. No way to chase some deer on public. Legally. Not enough property at there place. But I see you don't need a license to kill hogs. My wife says she won't eat them. But does anyone on here eat them? Any reason not to? What reason to?
Curious what your options are.

You can and should eat them. Most wild hogs taste excellent, large boars can be an exception although I’ve only killed one out of probably 50 that I couldn’t eat.

Where are u gonna be in FL?

What date range u in FL?

It’s legal to kill hogs during deer season on most WMAs and most areas go thru end of December

I’m in Central FL and can probably to tell u some WMAs

I also have a buddy has a hog hunting property in panhandle that he guides or let’s people hunt over feeders usually for a pretty cheap price

If the weather works our, we should be there the 24th, through after New year's. Might go see her sister on the east side for a few days.
It's central Florida. They are between the Croom and the Citrus wma. I have seen them go across the neighbors property. I guess I could also have them ask them if I could hunt them off there. Wouldn't need a license then.

Have you ever eaten a dog ran pig. Boars are worse than sows but it doesn’t matter much. Let them run and fight dogs for a half hour and they aren’t much worth eating. A few curs and a catch dog going in and killing them with a knife is as much fun as anyone can have in the woods but it’s the worst way to put pork on a table.

U have to verify with the individual wma brochure but most wma around me in north florida u only need to purchase a management area permit...no hunting license required.

Can you get a permit with out a license? I was looking at the web site and seems a little confusing.

Pretty sure you’ll need a license. When I hunted public in Florida I still needed a general hunting license and a wma permit to hog hunt. Maybe it’s changed recently?

Here in Ontario Canada I believe that any animal that isn’t explicitly listed as protected or game can be hunted but still requires a small game license.

Yes. Just as tasty as the ole grocery store pork. But I stay around 100 to 150 pound hogs for eating.

I eat them all. Even a 300# sow that had several squirrel size piglets in her and yes if they would’ve been bigger I would’ve ate them too. I am from south Louisiana after all.

Great point.
I do not, and will not shoot run down deer either.
Lactic acid built up in muscles is not good.
I remember my dad telling me about a cow they butchered after giving birth. They ended up throwing away the meat, after all the work butchering her.
This has always to me meant, make it a quick kill so they can't build up a sweat after the shot!!

Most guys in hawai'i only run pigs with dogs! Lactic acid is nature's favorite flavoring! :p

Soak them in vinegar, nope. Lemon juice? No again. Salt brine? Not quite there.
So you give up and put it in a croc pot and drown it in barbecue. Now it’s edible. Actually tasty until you breathe out your nose while chewing. You shouldn’t have to hold your breath to enjoy your food. That’s with sows and 50 lb boars. Let my hunting buddies have every big boar we killed. You could still smell them on your hands two days later.
