  • We've been working hard the past few weeks to come up with some big changes to our vendor policies to meet the changing needs of our community. Please see the new vendor rules here: Vendor Access Area Rules

Do you find yourself looking at spots you normally wouldn’t?

Access to great spots is increased exponentially because you aren't carrying 40lbs of gear in trying to scout and also set up. This gives you the confidence to try new areas too which takes pressure off your other areas and also increases the probability of seeing and potentially harvesting more deer. If the wind changes, you're more likely to change up as it doesn't take as long to break down and therefore you still have energy to stay in the hunt. These factors alone, in my opinion, make saddle hunting extremely effective!!!! The only thing better would be a rock solid ground game but the odds tip way back in the favor of the deer due to their extreme senses and our dulled ones.

When I started mobile hunting about 5 years ago I used to think I had to go deep. Of course on the public near me that's 3/4-1mile max in most spots. Still you wouldn't find much hunter sign, but you'd almost always find a stand over whatever sign was that far back. Last year and this I have really been thinking deeply about the idea of 'overlooked'. Like others have mentioned when other hunts have the same tools that you do it's hard to get away from them since all of the 'good looking' spots look good to everyone else too. I think Dan Infalt calls it dating the fat chick. I've been hunting a lot closer to rds, near the border of public and private land, etc. And sometimes those good looking spots can still be good you just have to figure out how to use the other hunters to your advantage. Most setup on the most obvious sign and overhunt their spots.
