Do you practice scent control?

He arrogant as ****. He can't talk for 2 minutes without mentioning how great he is

I used to admire him before I listened to the podcast with him and Infalt.

Hes a great hunter no doubt but is basically insecure as **** and treats anyone who hunts differently as of they are idiots and his way is the best and his results prove it.

He is a **** plain and simple. Very knowledgeable and shares alot of his info but there's something to be said for modestly and treating people with respect.

I have to say I think he was ambushed in THAT podcast.

I also have to say I have never met the man and hear he’s a great guy in person. So it may be the way he comes across in certain situations. IDK

Classy reply to a new hunter. He could have just ignored his request but had to go off on a new hunter. He's killed more bucks then I will ever even see. He's forgotten more then I will ever know bit hes not a nice guy I don't care how he is in person he constantly attacks people. Its a sign of insecurity and immaturity.

I do. I still get busted, but its rare now instead of common. Man it is really a different ball game out there now isn't it? I have only seen 2 2year olds in the last 3 sits. I get sad when the rutting action dies off.

Well does John really need to "prove to the community that his techniques can be successful"? The reply may be a bit on the gruff side, but it also reads mostly like someone trying to scheme a way to get for free what John derives income from selling.

The guy’s question was kind of weird. I see where the dude was coming from but I think John took it as “put up or shut up.” So in that context I see why John basically told him to shove it and he didn’t have to prove anything because he already has.
I think John is just stuck in his ways because they’ve worked for him and he’s got the heads to prove it but I think he has a hard time just saying “if this style doesn’t work for you, then so be it.” He just needs to stay off the internet comment sections for his own sake lol.

I have seen plenty of how to videos by John but does he have any actual hunts out there on video ?

I dont do much for scent control. But i do collect a lot of milkweed. I watch the wind and thermals like a hawk and will move if i see something i dont like, also if i see something i do like and need to get closer.
I do think about my entry and exit and move around a lot anyway.
I think we all would be depressed if there was a way to know how many deer busted you without us even seeing them.
I do what i can without becoming obsessed about it,i am obsessed enough about hunting,i dont need to expand that to a rigorous scent control regiment.

John kills big deer because he's the best whitetail hunter on the planet. He was proving that way before scent loc.

I like the Benoits. :)

No doubt John and Dan are excellent hunters....they aren't the only ones though. There are guys with unbelievable success who have no celebrity outside of local awareness.

I know of a guy who usually shoots 2 and sometimes 3 pope and young bucks in VA each year, not on private land. He's been doing if for years. It only impresses me because other hunters don't consistently produce like he does in the area, although some do pretty darn well often enough.

In some areas big bucks of P&Y caliber rarely exist, and guys taking 100 inchers consistently are darn successful and know how to hunt. Just because they don't seek out bigger antlered bucks doesn't disqualify their abilities in my book.

What impresses me about THP: the adaptability they've shown...not the bucks they've taken.

Anyway, what's the point?

I think if John says scent loc and his scent reduction efforts have increased his success exponentially, he's observed that.

And if Dan gets it done by playing the wind, he's confident in doing it that way because of his experience.

And if bazz77 says he sees just as many deer and of the same quality after giving up his scent regimine, that's his experience and I don't understand why anyone would question it.

At best we can qualify scent control's role in successful hunts, its unquantifiable in hunting situations. Posts like this are valuable, because a collection of experiences to draw from can provide info that hunters with limited time afield can draw on. Ain't never gonna be a consensus.

I do some minor things to try to reduce scent (keep all my outer layers in a bin with activated carbon, shower before I go out, etc.), but I'm not obsessive about it. I think it has helped me a little in that I have seen more deer, but if I were to try to follow the regimens some use, it would take the fun out of it for me.

At best, I'm trying to make the deer think I'm slightly further away than I actually am.

Need to change your screen name too. That doesn't help you :tearsofjoy:

It's actually a significant problem. I walk out without my coat and any other outer layers. Even with stopping every 10 minutes or so, it's hard for me not to be sweaty by the time I get to the tree and/or finish climbing.

I'm in decent shape (for an American), but I sweat easy.

Ha, I'm in the same boat.

When I hunt public, I'm heading to my spot in a t-shirt and lightweight wool baselayer bottoms, and I'm doing a full change at the tree, including socks, and bagging these up.

On public I pay much more attention to wind direction when selecting a tree to hunt than on private.

On private, I do attempt scent reduction and, given easy access, will hunt spots with less regard to wind.

Big buck killer, that all depends. I normally shoot 3.5 year old or older deer some are what I consider big 130"s or more but many are a 115-120"s as well. Its all about where you hunt. In the last 5 years I have killled a 183" a 168" and 148" in Kansas. In those same 5 years I have killed a 115, 108 and 122" deer here in NY. I used to be a nut about scent control. I still use a commercial ozone unit for my clothes and some gear but mainly cause I am hunting away from home and it saves washing them too often. I have learned a few things in 40 plus years of killing deer. Number one is hunt the wind, the second which to me is the most overlooked is your ground scent. If you are entering an area and walking deer runs or crossing them you just reduced your chances of seeing deer. I wear rubber boots and I do use Scent Killer on them but thats about it. John is a great deer hunter but when it comes to his scent control methods he is full of ****e!! I promise you he hunts the wind and he knows exactly what the thermals are doing and when they are doing it on every set he has!! Its been proven over and over again that matures deer nose is impossible to beat. The biggest issue is your breath, unless you can hold it for a couple hours you are producing a ton of stink every time you exhale. Also another tip is bigger deer rarely travel with the wind in there face. They a lot of time travel into a quartering wind as well as with it at their backs in areas where they can see a long ways. I did not read the whole thread but I know this, if you live in the Northeast or along the east coast and consistently kill a mature buck every couple years than you can and should go to the mid west and hunt. Guys get upset when I say this, but much easier to kill mature bucks in states like, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois,SD and ND as well as places like Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. I know cause I am
proof of that. Hunt the wind, watch your ground scent and figure out what the wind does with the thermals and it will help a whole bunch. Shawn

Well said, I couldn’t agree with you more, 30 years of hunting and this is spot on from my experience as well.

Absolutely not. All my mounts may disagree.

I think your hurting yourself if your too far in either direction. The guy who smells like he crapped his pants or the guy who puts on his hunting clothes with rubber gloves, both not good. Keep your clothes clean, don’t use heavy scented soaps and deodorants and fall somewhere in the middle. Oh yeah, play the wind.

Thats exactly how I feel about it.
