Does anyone hammock camp?

I use a Clark Vertex 2 person hammock when I go portaging with my girlfriend. It's almost as heavy as it is expensive, but I'm very happy with it. It's really helps sharing a roof with the misses.

No matter how many portages we plan to do we always bring a small gear tent as well. It's super handy having a place to store your gear, get changed or just hide from the rain. When split between a few people the weight isn't bad compared to how convenient it ends up being.

I bought a Lawson Blue Ridge with under tarp last year and haven’t even thought about tent camping. It’s not as light weight as some but dang it sleeps well.

If you take a good sleeping bag, you don’t need an underquilt and over quilt.
I hammocked camped in 0 degrees on the side of a mountain and let me tell you, a sleeping bag alone isn't getting it done. I used an underquilt and a sleeping bag with the tarp pulled down tight. Not going to lie, my feet got pretty cool the first night. Second pair of socks the second night cured it.

Any of you guys side sleepers? If so how does a hammock work with sleeping on your side.

It is harder to sleep on your sides with a gathered end hammock but can be done. If you are a side sleeper, get a bridge hammock. I would suggest looking at Haven tents for side sleepers. https://haventents.com/

I MYOG all of my hammock gear. It will be heavier than an UL tent but much more comfortable.

Also, for cold weather I would look into hammock socks. It will add about another 10-15 degrees to your current setup. https://dutchwaregear.com/product/vented-winter-sock/

I definitely recommend an UQ for any temps under 65°F.

I haven't weighed my setup other than the UQ 1 lb (9 ounces 850 to down) and quilt 21 ounces (16 ounces 850 fill down). I'm guessing the hammock would be about 6-10 ounces with UL straps and my tarp about 12-16 ounces.

Obviously the big issue is trees to hang it from. The Haven tents though can be used as a bivy, which is a plus.

I’m a side sleeper in my bed but in a hammock I typically fall asleep on my back with my feet off to the right side and my head off to the left. It’s weird feeling but I sleep better

In 0 degree weather, tents are freezing too heck some houses feel cold when the weather is that low

Ah yes. But is there a tip/trick/method one can use to comfortably sleep on their side without spending $265?
There are some that do sleep on their sides in gathered end hammocks. Hammock forums has more info on it.

I had always slept on my side in my bed but sleep on my back in my hammock. Recently though I'm primarily sleeping on my back even in bed.

I had thought I couldn't sleep on my back in hammock until I tried it. I had to force myself to sleep that way. The first night I had a great sleep too. But I woke up early morning due to being cold. I tried a sleeping bag and no UQ.

The trick to a good night's rest in a hammock is a diagonal lay. This gets you into a flat position. (You shouldn't be sleeping like a banana in a hammock).

I'll check on hammock forums a bit for answers on the side sleeper in a gathered end hammock.

That $265 system though includes everything you need to hammock camp except a quilt. There are other bridge style hammocks as well.

My MYOG hammock stuff was probably more than that! But I went with expensive airport lightweight material for my quilt. The goose down isn't super cheap either.

One thing I should have mentioned is that I sleep on my back but alternate/switch putting one leg at a 90° angle from my knee back under the out stretched leg. It is one of the most comfortable positions for me in a hammock.

Shug's YouTube channel is a bit like Ranch Fairy though. Some may not like him.

Yall are going to have me attempting to sleep in the yard on Saturday...

I sleep 70% of the time on my side in a gathered hammock. Pretty much I curl up into a ball or fetal position. No issues since my knees and feet do the spreading of the hammock. When I do sleep on my back I also rotate my legs in the 90* angle with my foot tucked under the other leg. Also handy when cold to keep your feet a lot warmer.

I alternate between sleeping on my back and on my side in my hammock. I do tend to curl up more when I sleep on my side, but I don't wake up stiff.
Matter of fact now that the pollen has died down I think the kids and I will camp in the back woods this weekend!

Love sleeping in a hammock. Our whole family has them, looking forward to camping this year in them.

It's amazing how much cooler it is being off the ground and a breeze under you. Great when it's hot, but you'll be cold in mid 60s without gear.

Don't set it up too tight, you want a good bow in it and then turn almost a 45 and lay across.

Hammocks are not expensive, but from a good vendor. Make some whoopie slings and hang!

I like that idea from Haven Tents. To bad the XL isn't available yet or they would of got some of my money.
