DRT/MRS on leaning trees.

Hey all,

I’m getting into rope climbing and descending this year and am really enjoying the DRT/MRS method the nysaddlehunter folks advocate. It is a good core workout, but I don’t mind. Truth is, I need it.

I’m having a challenge on leaning trees though. Either I’m swinging in the breeze, under the lean, trying to reach the tree with my toes so I can hump up, or I’m trying to balance on the “uphill” side, which doesn’t work for me, as I end out spinning off to the side, and twisting around in the breeze again.

Any tips? And is RADS/SRT easier on a leaner, as I’m just climbing the rope?

Thanks!

SRT/RADS is about the same. Just choose a tree that doesn't lean too much and climb from the low side. You should be able to pull up to the tie in point and then should be close to the tree so you can stand on your platform.

It amazing how little a lean is exaggerate when ur tether is at 30ft and u 15ft off the ground....1 of my practice trees has maybe a 5 degree lean that starts at roughly 20 foot....climbing up is easy but the rappel down swings u out to were I cant contact the tree so just swing and slowly descend

How do you climb DRT/MRS when you can’t contact the tree to hip thrust up?

I am still able to do the hip thrust while not contacting the tree. Another thing you can do is add an ascender or a friction hitch below your Blake’s hitch with a sling or loop for your foot and walk up with it. It’s a lot easier than all that humping.

That’s an interesting idea. Almost like in a rads/srt system. I was thinking of getting into that, but wanted to avoid the gear this season. Could I use my rope man w a foot loop? Also, is there a good video showing how to do it?

Yea man the ropeman is how I do it too! This is the only video I have right now and it’s just a time lapse. I’ll try and get a better one for you later. I also either tie a second Blake’s hitch or a prussic with a caribiner to the other side of the rope and it pulls the Blake’s hitch up as i climb.

I have my tether rigged up with a Ropeman 1/biner that I also use as a foot loop ascender. I have noticed that it is easier to climb with the foot loop in the beginning of the climb when you are farther from the base of the tree, after I get up half way or so i usually unhook the foot loop and hip thrust the rest of the way.

Ny saddlehunter has a video or two on just that. All you need as far as gear is a prussik loop and you can use your tether or linemans rope for a foot loop rope.

I was not able to climb by hip thrusting in free air. I never tried it on a straight tree. I was able to climb DRT with a foot ascender.

Ok. I just did the foot loop w rope man for DRT/MRS and it works for me. I was sorta sloppy at first, but I can do it. Less of a core workout and not that much faster but a little less sweat inducing. Made me want to try SRT.

I didn’t try it on the leaner. Unfortunately The paracord I preset slipped off of the rope when it got to the crotch. That took FOREVER to set up. Until I get more practice I’m not going to be any faster at presenting or ascend/descent than I would be w my tree hopper bolts, but I don’t like leaving bolts in the trees, climbing w rope is more fun, and I think it is actually going to be a lot cheaper to have a ton of presets this way.

And you can rappel down, that is huge in my opinion.

Are you just tying into the loop and not removing the loop so if your rope slips out the whole mess doesn't end up at your feet?
If so, watch the first 3 minutes of this.

I didn’t have the paracord as a loop, it was just up and over. It all landed at my feet. Lesson learned.
