Elk plans for 2020

I'm probably the last guy to ask as I'm about ready head out for my first ever elk hunt in a couple of weeks, however I will say that gohunt has been an invaluable resource for planning my hunt. It's really a meager investment when you consider the total cost of an out of state hunt.

Another great resource has been a series of videos put out by Randy Newburg on YouTube outlining each states' tag setup.

As far as drop camps go, I can't help you there I don't really know much about them. You'll prob have to search around for outfitters near whatever unit you pick that offer that kind of service.
Anything you need or lack for trip? I got a exo frame pack or swaro binos if ya need them dude gladly mail

Thanks bud, generous as always! I'm good on gear though. I've been putting together my kit for over a year now.

Headed through Amarillo and I think we went through a tornado. Pulled into a hotel and everyone’s systems are down. Can’t give anyone a room. About to hang my hammock in the lobby.

That sounds like some good times! That is how all the great hunting stories start "so we pulled into town just behind the tornado..."

1st night in spike camp and it snowed! Didn’t stick where we were but the mountain top was white.
I had a legal bull at 22 yards opening day but I drew a cow tag.
Was on a few but more people came in each day and the sign and sitings just decreased to the point we pulled out. Looking for a new area.

Good luck man, thanks for the update. Lots of guys are watching this to see how ya'll do. That had to be awesome having that shooter at 22 yards.

Did yall find my spot yet? Lungs burning any?

I’ll be leaving week after next for my first ever elk hunt. Will be in unit 81 and 80. Will need a lot of luck I’m sure. Haha.

Hit a few spots today. Nothing interesting. Going check more areas tomorrow.

Met a lady on a hiking trail as we were headed out of an area. She said thanks for bringing money into her community. I said next time we come back, could you provide more oxygen! Lol she said this is all we got! Lol
Another guy all spandexed out that was hiking said man it hot! Record breaking temps! And we were packing out the 1st spot with about a 50# pack 3 miles into our exit. I wanted to smack him with my trekking pole!

Air gets real thin over 11,000.

Same here for us, went in about 4 miles and weren’t too impressed. Going to try a new spot tomorrow. Air definitely gets thin and it’s HOT! So far we jumped a bedded bull moose last night on the way back to camp and he wouldn’t leave so we had to make a big circle. On Tuesday we were sitting down having lunch in a small creek bottom when a bear showed up walking right at us at about ten yards with three cubs. She spotted us and took of running but the Cubs didn’t know which way to run so they ran right at me! It ran maybe 2-3 ft past me and when it saw me it got scarred and called for its mom! She heard the cub and turned right around and full charged me, ears pined back! She stoped about 5 ft from me and ran up hill towards her cubs! Almost needed a change of shorts, but I don’t think I’ve ever nocked an arrow so fast in my life!

Woooo! Man that will make scentlok melt! Lol

Going that way in the morning. With all the hunters that hit our spot, your spot should be where they got pushed. Funny thing is, we found our spot last year figuring it was where the elk got pushed out of our 1st spot that year. Only had one other person there last year. This year we seen over 10. This new draw system messed up that area. I thought it would have less people but most of the guys we talked to said they didn’t get drawn for their area and our area was their second choice. Funny how that played out.

This unit wouldn't have happened to have a big fire in 2018 it would it?

We don’t talk specifics on the internet! Lol

I really have no clue. Last year was my 1st ever elk hunt. I’m a rookie. Just hoping for a blind cripple to come by.

Gotcha, I was just asking because this sounds exactly like the same unit I drew for. I e-scouted this unit pretty hard when it was an OTC unit before it was announced as a draw unit this year :). And I'm a super rookie, this will be my first elk hunt ever

Headed home. Spent the last 2 days checking every spot on the whole unit we thought would hold elk and just found tons of people. Every hunter we talked to said it’s ridiculous the amount of people. A local said they hate bowhunters because they walk all over the mountains and call too much, pushing all the elk to private. And that’s exactly what we seen happen.
Decided to take a break from mountain house meals and have a good last supper. Statewide fire band so we had to improvise.
