Extremely Detailed Topo Maps

LIDAR has been mentioned before, but also check for 5ft DEM when searching your state. More states are making these really detailed map layers available without having to download GIS software. They're really good for showing minor terrain changes. Some even let you overlay aerials.

It's something you may have to look around for. NC has a GIS site at https://www.nconemap.gov/ but I only see 20ft contours. I also used https://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html to get to the map below. I typed in Denver, NC to search. Then clicked Modify Map, Add, searched in that box for DEM and picked one of the shaded elevation ones to get the image below.

Some states are easier than others to get to web maps with these layers.
