"FASTENING" your ring of steps

What size amsteel are you guys using? Did you have to full bury or anything? Pardon my ignorance I don’t know much about amsteel

Mine was 7/64 and it’s not ideal at all. Hard to manage and the steps want to pop up when tensioned. I’m going to play around with running it through tubular webbing. I also wonder how a standard 1” webbing strap sewn around the steel spacer would work out.

Definitely need to give it a try....I've been out the last few days fighting some awful disease....but thats over now.
I do think webbing will work although, depending on the material, may not have much give or rotations in it,, so it may actually tighten better, but the stress will have to be monitored closely as it may stretch one side above the other. I'll be testing more once I'm done my spring semester.....I hate school when there's saddle hunting ideas to work on!

If the 1" strap doesn't work, you could always modify your steps by putting in a removable or permanent filler on the upper portion of the slot so that the amsteel goes through the bottom of the slot which is less likely to make it flip up!

i might be the only person who dont care if his steps are supper tight to the tree or move a little im compforitable with it.i just use a cam.is there an advantage im missing? if so id like to learn it.or is it just preffernce?
For me, if I need to step on a step for a shot, the tighter and hopefully immovable the step is, the more concentration can be put into staying still and taking the shot.

As for determining what kind of rod or rope/webbing to use, just test it out on a stump or telephone pole and torque the rod until its way to tight or even breaks or bends then you'll know the limits of the materials you're using.
Not to mention, but just saying it out loud for any new folks, your life should never be dependent on the strength of yr ROS and you should always be tetherd in.

I just ordered the Treehopper OCB to try out because that that longer lever looks intriguing.

where I think this method will work for me is if I want to use my stick topped with a flat scout as my platform. It can sometimes be a bit shaky depending on the tree. I bet adding this around the stick when at height will work great to really ‘cam’ it down.

This is what I am talking about..and I added a gear tie to the slider so you don’t have to wrap your tag end around a bunch of times, just fasten it with the gear tie and start torquing. Really cams the stick on the tree well.

I just ordered a few things, an 8 ft run of amsteel is among them.

I'm curious as well. I've only got the OCB from HangN30 but I'm unimpressed.

Good question, thanks for the post.

I'll be following
Why unimpressed? I’ve messed with it, 3 step rig. Seem perfectly fine.

The steps themselves are good. I just don't care for the ocb/strap. I know they're pretty popular, maybe I'll come around some time. I think the one i have is pretty loud when snugging it up to the tree and I'd like the sweet spot to be more forgiving before/when camming over.

I just grabbed a 3/8 rod with a 7/16 spacer, I only have jockey tape at the moment but I’m liking this already.

I hope you all don't mind but I'm gonna make a new official thread for this torniquet method, to make it easier for new folks and others who haven't seen it yet. I'm going to be posting a new video with a 1" strap with this method! Peace!
