Hi everyone,
Been doing a little squirrel hunting just for the heck of it since deer season is over in MI. Not done it before so it's a learning experience. I'm enjoying it and have tried various non-call calls (kissing my hand, rubbing quarters together, and the popsicle stick DIY distress call). I'll admit I haven't been out at the best times (usually the late afternoon/evening on semi-warm winter days since that's when I can get out), but my calling seems to work just OK. Considering buying a call since they're fairly cheap; is it worth it (in your opinion) and if so, what call(s) do you like? Thanks

Here is what I use. I agree generally less is more. However it has its place. I have used it more than once to get a stubborn squirrel to pick his head around a tree. Especially if they hang up on the other side of a tree and they don’t know your there. It’s almost always gets a look. Less is more with a squirrel call. Although I have on rare occasions when it was slow able to get one to check out a call.

I have the Swamp Boys Custom Calls Rat-Attack Squirrel Barker, and it sounds mighty good. Pretty sure @Nutterbuster made a YouTube video on it, and that's how I heard of it. It's a good, realistic sound, and my 7-year-old LOVES monkeying around with it while we're squirrel hunting. That said, I can't say I've ever seen it make a difference in the woods with anything other than entertaining my son, though I'll be the first to admit that might just be because I'm not a good caller.

You may be doing all this, but you have to treat squirrel calling as seriously as duck or turkey. No good calling at a squirrel that knows you're there. If they see or hear you, it won't work. You have to let the woods get quiet.

Also, I think all calling is a "50% of the time, it works every time" type of trick.

I like this one. I tend to agree with what’s been said already - I don’t have a ton of luck with calling. It is something I carry on the days where nothing is moving. If I get two squirrels a season that I otherwise wouldn’t have then I’ll carry it with me.

Out of the ones I saw online, that one intrigued me the most. Seemed to have the best sound and I like supporting a small, family company.

It certainly has a very squirrelly sound to it, which I like. Others I’ve heard can sound like a modified squeak toy your dog would chew on.

Get a beagle. Train it for rabbits and watch it chase every squirrel in the woods while I turns it nose the opposite direction of rabbits. That’s what I did at least! Haha
