Does anyone cut their own feathers? It looks simple enough to do. I’ll likely get the a&a template from tuffhead. Any other templates anyone would recommend?

I use a Young feather burner, 3 Rivers archery choppers (all shapes/sizes), and/or Scissors.
It’s not bad at all. Have fun. It’s very rewarding.

Here are a couple examples. All forms of “cutters” mentioned above were used here. Again, Have fun with it.

I’m pretty sure 3rivers has the templates and I know tuffhead has the Ashby template.

I think I missed the Question??? Do you mean cutting feathers like @dalton916, or did you mean cutting/chopping feathers into different shapes? My apologies if I misunderstood.

Yeah, me too, I think lol.

I have two cutters, 1 parabolic and 1 shield. If that’s not what you’re talking about then I apologize.

I'm referring to buying full-length feathers and cutting or chopping whatever shape and size myself. I do have a goose that I could clip whenever she grew a new set, my wife would certainly be excited about that idea haha

These are gorgeous. I crest, but nothing like that.

I cut all my own feathers with scissors and a homemade template. Just make sure your template is stiff enough but other than that it is pretty easy.

I chop if I’m storing them or sending out to someone. Burning stinks, but it is very effective and you can create some neat shapes. Can be a pain to do on a nicely crested, wood arrow. Have to be careful.....they get hot.

If you’re chopping, make sure your quill is ground down.....a full one is hard on a blade. Years ago I got a feather grinder from Chuck at Two Tracks bows. Never seen another one. I feel like I have to keep it forever.

If you‘re grinding after splitting the feather.....please wear dust protection. Feather dust will crush your lungs.

I have an old chopper that has been rebuilt a couple times. I have no idea how many feathers I have chopped with that thing over the years. It’s been collecting dust since I got a Young’s feather burner.

If there is interest, at one time I would grind raw feathers and send them back to the owners. I can at least get the quill down to a manageable size for trimming/cutting. I’ll try to format a pic of my grinder.
